(More customer reviews)I have had two Rainwise weather stations over the past 10+ years. They are great when they work, but their engineering is not always up to an outdoor envirnoment. In the earlier model, I had problems with cheap connectors in the unit which were not designed for outdoor use. Presently, my Mark III rain gauge failed due to corrosion of components on a small circuit board located under the rain collector.
The whole system just isn't engineered with outdoor exposure in mind. This latter problem could have been prevented by a coating of epoxy over the circuit board components to seal them from the inevitable moisture. When I mentioned this, they said they coat the board with a polyurethane board protector, but that's not adequate for protection in a wet, outdoor environment.
There are also small but annoying mechanical issues that point to a lack of design thought. One is the location of the screw pattern to fasten the rain collector. One of the four screws is located between the collector body and the mast, making it very difficult to remove with a normal screwdriver. It really requires a very long Phillips screwdriver. Had the screw pattern been rotated 45 degrees, each would have been easily accessable.
Second is the cotter pin used to fasten the screen in the rain collector. You need to clean the collector screen gets plugged with rotting debris. When you replace it, if you don't fold the pin legs back as far as they will go, not just enough to secure the screen, it will interfere with the tipping rain buckets, making the gauge inoperative. I found this out the hard way. A shorter cotter pin would prevent this. No mention of this in the instruction manual.
Their service department is very responsive. They help me troubleshoot the problems and send replacement parts as needed. That's a plus. But if the unit is on a rooftop, making repairs isn't always easy!
