I thought the idea of being able to access weather data via the internet from a local weather station would be superior than purchasing the more expensive unit with the fancier wind speed/direction, humidity, and barometric pressure devices. I still think this is the case but not with this unit.
I got it set up and connected easily. Everything worked within a few minutes, but then it began to lose connection to the outdoor temperature. I got that reset, but then it didn't reliably display the outdoor temperature. To get the outdoor temperature, one has to press a button and then the temperature is displayed across the bottom marque screen.
Whoever programmed this unit ( and for that matter all the LaCrosse units) has never used one. Seems like the user would like to be able to just walk up to the unit and see the outside temperature. No, you have to press a button on the back of the unit to get that info. The more readily available info is the sunrise/sunset times. Maybe I'm the odd man out, but that data is predictable and doesn't change abruptly, at least not here in Colorado. But the programmer clearly thinks the sunrise time is more important than outside temperature. There is no method to customize the data screen. It is very busy and attempts to show too much info and, unfortunately, the wrong data.
The forecasts off the Internet are nice, however, to get all the data, one has to press hidden buttons on the back of the unit. Still, it is faster than turning on a computer. Remember also that this unit requires a hardwired ethernet connection for the transponder. The transponder unit is not internet wireless.
The plastic case looks okay from a distance. The buttons on the back are cheap and when pressed, sometimes makes popping noises. If you reach around to press a button and miss, the whole case deforms and feels flimsy.
I finally decided this wasn't worth the $40 I paid for it and sent it back. I'd be more than willing to pay $100 for something that works and was user friendly. Anyone listening out there? We are not all WalMart shoppers that are just trying to get something as cheap as possible. La Crosse is the only company that offers internet based weather data for the city I live. So, I feel stuck with them if I want this technology. If you live in a big city, I'd suggest using the Bushnell brand.

This internet-powered wireless forecaster one-ups the TV weather reporter by providing forecasts for the chance of precipitation, rainfall amount, hours of sun, barometric pressure, and wind gust speed and direction, in addition to the expected sky conditions and high and low temperatures. From La Crosse Technology, the Weather Direct WD-3312U four-day forecaster offers free internet forecasts sent directly to its display while it also relays the current outdoor temperature transmitted by the included TX-50U wireless sensor. A provided AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router for internet forecast transmissions, whether or not the computer is on or not. Upon online registration, the user selects the forecast location from over 60,000 US and Canadian locations.
The chocolate-framed display stands alone, or wall hangs. The top LCD section displays the time, the indoor temperature, and the current day\'s forecast, conveyed with the projected high and low temperatures and sky condition icon. On the second LCD tier, rain, wind, sun, and pressure information toggle, while the third tier reveals forecast icons and high/low temperatures for the next three days. Forecasts update every six hours. The location, location forecast, sunrise/sunset times, and outdoor temperature scroll across the bottom display section. On the back of the display, five function keys enable LCD contrast and scrolling-speed adjustments, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection, alarm setting, five-minute snooze activation, and viewing micro forecasts for morning, afternoon, evening, and night. The gateway and remote sensor both communicate with the display from 330 feet unobstructed, and come with mounting hardware. For forecast operation, no additional software or Wi-Fi connection is required. However, the system does necessitate high-speed internet service, a network router, and the separate purchase of two C and two AA batteries. A limited one-year warranty covers the forecaster.
