Easy to install if you have a extendable pole.. Be careful when changing batteries to not lose the "tiny" screws..A hinged access door for battery compartment would be nice..

Inspeed Vortex Handheld Anemometer (Wind Meter) Review

Inspeed Vortex Handheld Anemometer (Wind Meter)

I ordered this handheld anemometer for my bf who teaches college meteorology. He wanted a 3 cup anemometer to demonstrate for his classes. This was exactly what he wanted, he says it works great for his purposes, and he can also check wind speeds at home. The price was good, the workmanship of the product is excellent. Delivery time was also excellent, I was told it could arrive as late as Dec 29, but it actually arrived before Christmas, Dec 22 or 23, so from order to home delivery was a very short turn around.

La Crosse Technology TX-23U Wind Sensor for La Crosse 915 MHz Weather Stations Review

La Crosse Technology TX-23U Wind Sensor for La Crosse 915 MHz Weather Stations

I have a weather station from LaCrosse Technology that has worked great for the one year that I've owned it. I recently moved to a new house, and the cable guy accidentally stepped on the wind gauge that was sitting on my floor until I had the time to install it. Sure enough, it was damaged with no hope of being repaired. To my surprise, I found the same model right here, so I ordered it as a replacement. I installed it, and it worked great. But 2 weeks later, my weather station stopped getting signals from it. It is the exact same model as my old wind gauge, so it should have worked just fine. But, I was wrong. So, I sent it back to Amazon, and I received yet another defective one. After that I just got my money back from Amazon. I would not recommend that anyone purchase this item, because it probably won't work properly. I suggest that you just buy a whole new weather station instead of ordering this as a replacement. Well, I hope that helps somebody. Thank you for reading my review!

Pole Mount Anemometer Review

Pole Mount Anemometer

I would have given it a 5 if it had arrived earlier. The product is perfect and easy to install. I needed to measure the wind speed in our area to see if its feasible to install a residential wind turbine. Currently the data shows tat if I install a wind turbine I will not get the most out of it. I might need to raise the elevation further but there are some restrictions. Buying this product helped make the right investment i.e purchasing a wind turbine or not.
One suggest is for amazon to let the customer know earlier that standard shipping on international deliveries can not be tracked. I would have change the method of shipping if I knew that before i submitted my order.

After years of unreliable temperature readings because of the sun I had resigned myself to constructing an enclosure out of wooden shutters. On a lark I searched on the web and found this Radiation sheild. It was a breeze to assemble and now my temperature sensor is providing an accurate reading when it is in the sun.

The SRS100LX temperature and humidity radiation shield is a low cost solution for protecting temperature and relative humidity sensors. It consists of nine molded plastic plates and an UV inhibited ABS plastic mounting arm. The wedge-shaped plates provide maximum airflow around the sensor while at the same time minimizing direct exposure to sunlight. The passive shield is shaped to allow natural air convection around the sensor so that the air temperature inside the shield is a good representation of the outside air. The shield also provides protection from rain and snow. The SRS100LX radiation shield fits most temperature and humidity sensors sold by Ambient Weather. Order the SRS100 for smaller sensor installations (reference dimensions below). The SRS100LX is designed with a highly reflective white surface to reflect the sun's direct radiation. The multi-plate design allows for maximum airflow. The UV inhibited ABS plastic mounting arm can be mounted to any vertical surface. U-Bolts are included to mount to any pole.Compatible Sensors*: RTGR328NA, TX50U-IT, TX13U, TX6U, TX7U, TX4U, TX18U, TX8U, TX9U, WS2010-22, WS2010-25, WS2010-28, WS2310-25, TX21U-IT, TX25U-IT, TX27U-IT, TX28U-IT, TX29U-IT, TX37U-IT, TX29UDTH-IT, TX22U-IT, and other sensors from different manufacturers are also compatible with the SRS100 *Some sensors require the removal of mounting bracket or aesthetic covers to fit within the inner cavity of the SRS100 (WxLxH): 2.5" x 4.3" x 7.4".

Wireless Vantage Pro2TM Plus with 24-Hr Fan Aspirated Radiation Shield Review

Wireless Vantage Pro2TM Plus with 24-Hr Fan Aspirated Radiation Shield
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The BEST DAVIS has to offer to date....
The Vantage Pro2 PLUS is a great unit and for any weather hobbyist this home PWS (personal weather station) is in the professional category. I have had mine for two months and love it plus the data you send is recorded by NOAA, MESO and all the rest and the installation is very well explained step by step.. It is wireless and flawless, the wireless capabilities I think is 1,000 feet but with Davis you can purchase relay stations to put your station farther away from where the console is indoors that you receive your signal from. The anemometer (wind meter) has a 40' cable on it so you can put your weather station on a pole but mount the anemometer up to 40' away the ISS (the weather station body). The Plus2 comes with UV and Solar Radiation sensors and it is also fan aspirated and what that means is it has a low cfm fan inside to cool the interior so an accurate ambient temperature is read, this is the most accurate outdoor temp reading that can be done thanks to that little fan moving air very slowly through the interior of the ISS-weather station. Maintenance is low, you may have to open it up once or twice a year to clean the inside and remove dust or such but opening it up is very easy to clean. The other things you will need when you purchase this unit is a mounting pole which come in kit form or you can fabricate. In the ground would be nothing more than a steel or galvanized pole set in concrete. Davis makes a universal galvanized tripod roof mount and it is very good, I own that but haven't installed it. I used an existing yard pole and took a regular satellite TV dish mount pole for an installation that would allow you to mount your satellite dish to an existing pole at your home, it works great for this purpose. If you live in SNO country then you will need the rain collector heater to melt snow fall to get the actual water content, you may purchase this at a later date if this weather station is tipping the budget in the initial purchase of the station itself. You will also need to figure out what software you like to use, I like the WeatherLink I.P. as it directly uploads via a Cat 5 cable to your wired/wireless router/DSL modem, that is all automatic on the uploads and the Davis console for this unit is house current powered with a DC adapter PLUS it also has battery back up, 3 size C batteries...This is a professional weather station but do not be overwhelmed by that.. Davis offers excellent support and the instructions that come with their products are pretty much idiot proof meaning easy. I would say if you can set up a brand new computer then you can set this Davis weather station up via the instructions and if you get stumped Davis support is there for you....If you are thinking of having fun as a weather enthusiast/hobbyist then this professional weather station is for you..5 STAR RATING....... I selected the 5 STAR rating but it ended up showing only a 4 star rating, a glitch in the upload I guess.

This is the first weather station I've purchased. I read the user manual after downloading it from Ambientweather.com before ordering it. So when the unit showed up a few days later it was a snap to set-up. The unit worked great had a storm come in this last weekend was able to measure the wind strength, direction, pressure, rainfall and the temp. Using the touch screen console is a bit hard to use, I used the enclosed software CD Easyweather to set up the console. You also have the ability to set up alarms for all kinds of high and low situations. The Easyweather software is a very plain program with no instructions on how to use it, other then what is in the manual nothing fancy. Per Ambient Weather website, I down loaded Cumulus for free which does everything Easyweather does plus the ability to upload to wunderground.com and post your weather station information online, the help section is full of information on setting it up and how to read the data. If you buy this unit or any other weather station make sure you check out Cumulus.

La Crosse Technology WS-2812U-IT Professional Weather Center with Solar Wind Sensor Review

La Crosse Technology WS-2812U-IT Professional Weather Center with Solar Wind Sensor

I bought this unit to replace my honeywell 924W (sadly it was barely 6 months old and totally fell apart).
Costco had these 2812 units on on sale; so it was a no brainer to try it out at the prices they had.
So far so good. I don't have any major complaints.
I do find with my sensor locations the rain gauge will sometimes drop off, but it always gets re-acquired. I also believe I have the sensors setup in worst case scenario. Unlike the way other wireless units operate, the outdoor temp/humidity sensor collects data from the anemometer and rain gauge sensors, then sends the data to the main display. Unfortunately I have the rain gauge in the back of my house, and the temp/humidity in the front. So the rain gauge has to xmit all way through the house to get data to the temp/humidity sensor.
I had no trouble getting the station to upload it's data using WUHU (it's free; google it), combined with the included heavy weather software. The only quirk with using heavy weather along with WUHU is you have to have both programs running all the time. WUHU can't read data directly from the 2812 at this point in time, so it reads from a file heavy weather creates. Unfortunately heavy weather doesn't write the "wind gust" data to this file. So WUHU doesn't know the actual max gust. To make up for this, it simply uses the highest wind speed shown in last 10 minutes. So if your picky you'll find your max gust data and what gets uploaded via WUHU will not match. Not really an issue... but I thought I would mention it. I know a few of us have contacted the company you write "heavy weather" and asked them to include gust data into the file they write out.
I am aware reviews of the 28XX models prior to the 2812 were not good. The 2810 & 2811 both have inaccurate rain gauges, and the anemometers we're known to take on water and fail. However with the 2812 the rain gauge is fixed (verified by multiple users) and so far I haven't heard any issues with the anemometer taking on water. Unfortunately I haven't experienced any heavy rain since I installed it; so I can't say 1st hand. But from what I read they have addressed both issues.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-9535U Large 4 Day Wireless Severe Weather Alert Station Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-9535U Large 4 Day Wireless Severe Weather Alert Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had multiple La Crosse weather stations for many years, and when I saw this new model integrated with the Internet I couldn't wait for the product to show up.
Now I wish it hadn't.
First, the package comes with a 4x6 "Quick Set-Up Guide" card that offers no troubleshooting. To troubleshoot, you must hit the [...] web site. Not a big deal, until you have to navigate around the site to try and figure out how to reboot your "Weather Gateway" or the display itself.
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a software engineer with significant network administration experience. It took me nearly 90 minutes to get their "Weather Gateway" to blink it's little red light in a pattern of 4-- and I'm not sure precisely what I did. First, it was blinking in a pattern of 2 -- no DHCP IP address was assigned to the device. I run DHCP on my home network, a 10.0.0.1 gateway. Perhaps this was my downfall- not sure- as a lot of devices ship with a default of 192.168.1.xxx environment. Even if it did, surely the manufacturer would have been cognizant that not everyone runs a 192.168.1.xxx network environment. After monkeying around with the "Weather Gateway" for awhile, I did manage to finally find the "Weather Gateway" from my Windows XP laptop after I downloaded their advanced configuration tool. I re-programmed the "Weather Gateway" to my network map, but still no luck. Now, it was flashing in a pattern of 3-- IP address assigned, but cannot get to "box.weatherdirect.com" which provides the data feed. I checked all my logs, as I do run a firewall- nothing showed up. I rebooted the device one more time, and suddenly I got the magic pattern of 4.
Then, per the directions, it was time to link up the display with the "Weather Gateway" so they could talk. That took me another 2 hours. The moment I installed the batteries in the display, the display started scrolling "Updating" which was not what the display was supposed to say-- at least not according to their directions. I looked and look for how to factory reset the display, to no avail. One screen on their web site said to hold down the "Set" and the "ALM" keys together, as this is a non-audio model-- but the device has no "ALM" key.
Time to call technical support, a non 1-800 number, but most people have free nationwide on their cell phones so no big deal. This was Friday afternoon around 2PM Central-- their office hours according to their automated system are from 8AM to 6PM CST, Mon thru Fri. After 30 minutes of listening and waiting for someone to answer- I opted to try email. Their web site even says that for "faster service" to use email. Sent an email, heard nothing back-- and it's now Sunday. I finally managed to factory reset the display (there are only so many button combinations!)- and it FINALLY had synchronized with the "Weather Gateway" internet device.
Awesome - except I did all of this in my home office, which isn't where I wanted the "Weather Gateway" to be mounted to the wall. So, this afternoon (Sunday) I unplugged the "Weather Gateway" and took it into the master bedroom closet to mount it, connecting to the gigabit switch I have running in there. I was back to the pattern of 2 flashing lights- argh!!
Now, their documentation is in bold and very explicit - if you don't obtain the pattern of 4 flashes within 30 seconds, give up -- it failed, reboot the "Weather Gateway" and troubleshoot. Well, I spent another full hour screwing around with the "Weather Gateway" and was not able to get an IP address assigned to it. Ironically, my Windows XP laptop was getting a DHCP address assigned to it so I could search their help site-- so I know my DHCP was working properly.
Don't waste your money on WeatherDirect.com and its related products-- just yet. Clearly, their equipment is buggy and not yet ready for prime-time.
I love their idea, and in fact on Friday we in Houston were under a Dense Fog Advisory- and sure enough it showed up on the display with the orange light glowing.
The promise of their "Weather Gateway" being 1) plug in the ethernet cable, and 2) plug in the power is awesome- but don't kid yourself, it certainly wasn't that simple in my case, and I'm left with a "Weather Gateway" paperweight that isn't doing anything, and an un-responsive company not providing me any support.

Prepare for a forthcoming ice storm, flash flood, or excessive heat wave with this wireless severe weather alert forecast station from La Crosse Technology. On its large display screen, the WD-9535U four-day forecast station relates internet-provided forecasts, advisories, watches, and alarms for the forecast location, selected from over 60,000 US and Canadian location options. Alerts are also sent as e-mails or text messages for away-from-home notification. A provided AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router for internet transmissions to the display, whether or not the computer is on. Additionally, the forecaster provides the outdoor temperature, measured from right outside the front door with the included TX-50U wireless sensor.
The large LCD display stands alone, or wall hangs. In the top section, the current day\'s forecasted high and low temperatures and a sky condition icon are posted. The customizable, scrolling LCD center section allows the user to use the Display button to choose from assorted data sets, including time, day of week, date, indoor and outdoor temperatures, or current forecasts. I have another weather station which is not as fancy and it works fine. This (La Cross WS-1516 IT) one I just bought measures wind and rain as well. I have had SEVERAl problems with it. I had difficult getting it to measure rain...then wind and rain. Because I live in San Diego...months went by without rain so I did not know it was not working properly. The LaCross staff was VERY GOOD about helping and communicating via email and offering to take a return for service. The problem is that the unit is VERY, VERY, VERY (did I say VERY) sensitive to the AA and AAA batteries used in the unit. Care MUST be taken to the EXACT sequence of putting the batteries. One MUST find batteries that are AT LEAST good for 7-8 years of the date used (marked on the battery package). A specific time MUST be respected throughout the set up sequence i.e. "Wait 15 miniutes before proceeding....". They mean this. I must have done the set up sequence 20 times now. I must have gone through 10 sets/combinations of batteries. Now that I truly understand how important all this is...it seems to work great. LaCross should print in big letters:"LOOK YOU STUPID TWIT!! READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND DO EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS...OR ELSE THE UNIT WILL NOT WORK!" The sort of tell you that batteries are important..but they do not stress just HOW important and WHY until they finally send you an email with VERY clear and good set up instructions. I respect the LaCross crew for being helpful and patient...but it is a hard and painful learning curve....

Magnetic Mount Anemometer Wind Meter Review

Magnetic Mount Anemometer Wind Meter

All I can say is, "Why didn't I think of this?" Being a NWS trained spotter in N. Texas, I needed an anemometer to quickly and accurately take wing readings, which this item does in fine style. When not in my chase kit, I either leave it outside or use it to see what my girlfriend's hair dryer can produce in regards to wind speed. Making changes to the cable length is easy to do and all you need is some old-school stereo cable.
The only thing I would change about this product would be for Inspeed to apply some coating on the magnets to prevent scratching the paint on your car, but have since corrected this issue by applying epoxy to the underside of the magnets, which doesn't appear to of weakened the strength of the magnets at all.
You could easily use this at home as a static anemometer by drilling two holes on the vertical support arm and attaching it to pole outside.
This product is a must have for any weather enthusiast hands down! It's rugged, simple, accurate and sophisticated all at the time same.

Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 Weather Station (Wireless) Review

Davis Instruments Vantage Pro2 Weather Station (Wireless)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We took care of a home in Hawai'i that had a Davis Vantage Pro2 station installed and though I am the "weather nut" in the family, my wife became very interested and checked the full-function console screen every day. Each gust of wind would cause her to ask: "How strong was THAT one?" After five weeks there she was the one that suggested we order one for our home. I never dreamed that I could own one like this but Amazon prices it so that it is possible. The installation was simply clamping it to a 2" diameter pipe that sits in a cup on the deck and attaches to the eave of the house. I carry the console to the neighbors and show it off. They may purchase their own console (about $300) and read data from my transmitter package (1,000' range), or I can place duplicat consoles in the greenhouse, garage, or den, with a limit of eight total. Also, each console will re-transmit to another, in a "daisy-chain" fashion. Not only does this device display more current items then you could ever think of, it maintains past data and graphically depicts the previous 24 hours of most items. As an example, for rainfall you will get totals for today, this month, this year, the last 24 years (if it was running then), the current rate of rainfall, and the total rain for this storm. It will also tell you the totals of the last 24 storms. How accurate is it? With the optional software, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will accept your data, (you can read about it if you go to: [...]), as well as schools and other groups. Optional equipment will allow you to determine if you should water your plants, to measure temperature in multiple places, and to read solar radiation levels. We are VERY happy with our Davis Vantage Pro2 system and strongly recommend it to you.

La Crosse Wireless Weather Station WS-2310-15 Review

I bought this to replace our old worn out wind speed sensor. We have had our weather machine for about 4 years now and the wind sensor started not recording. Since you can't get inside that easily to fix them we bought this replacement and figure it should last us another 4 years. Not too bad for a $45 investment. I searched all over the net to find one and thanks to Amazon I was able to find what I was looking for. Lacrosse and Ambient didn't show them on either of their websites. Thanks again Amazon for making my shopping easy and a pleasure.

Smartworks Mini Travel Size Weather Station Alarm Clock Key Holder Review

I wanted a thermometer to keep in my car, mostly so I would know just how hot it gets during the summer here. I've had this about a month or so, and the temperature readings are all much higher than the actual temps (I've tested it against several other thermometers I have. Plus, the light no longer works. I have thrown it in the trash and I just bought a cheap little unit at Home Depot.

La Crosse Technology WS-2810U-IT Professional Weather Center with Solar Wind Sensor Review

La Crosse Technology WS-2810U-IT Professional Weather Center with Solar Wind Sensor

I have owned several types and brands of these weather stations and I must say this one is the best I have owned. I really like the fact that it is truly wireless and is very accurate when being compared to local noaa weather stations. Its low maintenance and batteries last a long time. The pc link that allows you to download data to the software is a really nice feature. Setup is relatively easy, but does require you to actually read the instructions to ensure you are not placing sensors to far away and setting things up correctly!

The local meteorologist has nothing on this all-wireless professional weather center from La Crosse Technology. Accompanied by a thermo-hygro sensor, a self-emptying rain gauge, and a solar-powered wind sensor, the WS-2810U weather center assesses a host of climate conditions. The weather center holds 1750 weather data sets recorded at user-selected intervals. On its contrast-adjustable LCD, the weather center displays: date and 12- or 24-hour time; forecast icon with tendency indicator; indoor/outdoor temperatures (Fahrenheit or Celsius); indoor/outdoor relative humidity percentage; wind chill, speed, and direction with a 16-notation compass; air pressure; rainfall rate and totals; dew point; minimum/maximum values with time and date stamp; and 24- or 72-hour history graphs. Several weather alert alarms warn of storms or other problematic conditions.
The weather center\'s remote sensors evaluate outdoor temperatures from -39.8 to 139.8 degrees F, wind speeds from 0 to 118 mph, and rainfall from 0 to 393-3/5 inches. From a distance up to 200 feet, the wind and rain sensors transmit data to the thermo-hygro sensor. In turn, the thermo-hygro sensor communicates with the receiver from up to 200 feet away. The receiver wall-hangs or sit on a tabletop with a detachable stand; the sensors come with mounting brackets and hardware. For data storage on a home computer, the weather center comes with a USB transceiver and the free download of La Crosse\'s Heavy Weather 2800 Pro PC software v.1.3 (compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems). The transceiver communicates with the receiver from up to 80 feet away. To power the weather center, the separate purchase of five C and two AA alkaline batteries is required. A limited one-year warranty covers this item. The weather center receiver measures 7 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 4-3/5 inches high.

La Crosse Technology EA-3010U Handheld Anemometer Review

Fun to have. The feature set is good, while the user interface takes a bit getting used to. The thermometer and wind chill meter are useful extras. Ditto the peak, average and current measurements.
The meter works well when measuring winds above 5 mph. However, when trying to measure the wind speed over the pool, the meter sometimes would not spin up. The spec says it can measure down to 0.44 mph. My device won't register less than 1.5 mph, and I have no idea how accurate it is at that point.
