(More customer reviews)This sounded like something my 91 yr old father who is a weather buff would enjoy. I am used to "Talking" items being user friendly for people with severe vision imparement. This is not. Some of the information scrolls across the screen and is not spoken. The entire signing up process was done online, so if a person is not comfortable with a computer, someone else must assist.
Also, you get 1 location to monitor that is free (you must fill out quite a form on the computer), but there is a yearly fee for any of the additional 4 locations it can monitor. I felt that the description was not clear on that.
There have also been a number of times the recording seems "broken" for lack of a better word. It will repeat several words of the greeting, then stop completely; never giving the weather. Sometimes nothing happens when you press the button and you assume it is broken. But the next day it is working fine!
It is basically impossible to speak with anyone at the website, although a number is given. I have sent a message asking for a call back and never received it. Very poor customer support.
Someone who has lots of time to "fiddle" with it and can see would probably do okay.

A world away from the old-fashioned thermometers of yesteryear, this Weather Direct forecast station from La Crosse Technology offers everything from a localized forecast to estimated sunset time, all powered by the precision and speed of the Internet. To boot, the unit features a talking mechanism that speaks the readings aloud and can deliver brief updates of the news in world events, entertainment, and sports. With the forecaster tuned to your choice of over 60,000 North American locations, you can start the day with a personalized forecast in helpful detail, such as, "Good morning, (Your Name), here's the forecast for Madison, Wednesday, July 15th. High temperature will be 80 degrees with clear skies. Winds will range from 3 to 11 miles per hour. No precipitation is expected." Specific locations served are listed at www.weatherdirect.com/places.
A high-speed Internet connection and a wireless router are needed to run the Weather Direct, but no software is required and no subscription is necessary. The unit communicates continuously with a dedicated website, so weather predictions are updated to current information around the clock. Forecasts for up to four days out are available for morning, afternoon, evening, and night, allowing for more accurate preparations and simplified planning.
In addition to its weather programming, the Weather Direct includes a self-updating atomic clock, a date display, daily high and low temp tracking, and an alarm with snooze. The bottom LCD line scrolls the current outdoor temperature, selected location, sunrise and sunset times, and forecast.
La Crosse Technology packages the Weather Direct with one remote sensor and a LAN cable to connect to a network router. The wireless range is 330 feet, and use of a PC is necessary during setup or to customize features. One year of free access to severe weather alerts from the National Weather Service is also included, as is a membership to theweatherclub.com, which lets you monitor your backyard conditions from anywhere in the world.
The base device display measures 6-1/4 by 3 by 5-3/8 inches, and the outdoor sensor is 1-1/2 by 1/2 by 8 inches. The system takes two AA batteries and two C batteries, not included, and La Crosse Technology backs it with a one-year warranty.
