Oregon Scientific Weather Station 500 Review

Oregon Scientific Weather Station 500

Looks and works like advertised - I'm very happy with it! Nice large easy to read numbers, and an arrow button to toggle through the three available remote monitors, of which it comes with one included. (I ordered an additional one and both work fine.) Quality seems good, and no complaints so far after approx. 1 month of use. The lighted display comes in handy to illuminate all the readings when surrounding room lights are off, and stays on for approx. 5~6 seconds when the light button is pushed. The main reason I bought this one is for the outdoor humidity sensor, in which I had a cheaper brand before that didn't last long at all.

I received a similar (but not identical) SkyScan clock from Sams Club about 1.5 years ago. It's worked great up until last week. The outside temperature sensor stopped working. I replaced the batteries and that didn't seem to help. After contacting Eddie at Impact Merchandising (the distributor of SkyScan products) he emailed me with a fix. What you have to do is take out the batteries from both the clock and the temp sensor. Leave them out for AT LEAST 15 minutes. Then make sure you place new fresh batteries in the temp unit first. Then place new batteries in the clock. (DO NOT TRY TO SET THE TIME OR PRESS ANY BUTTONS ON THE CLOCK). Place the two units 3-5 feet apart. You should get a signal within 15 minutes. If not repeat the process once. If that doesn't fix the clock you can purchase a new temp sensor for $5 directly from them. Their contact info is :

Effective and informative, this SkyScan atomic wall clock from Equity by La Crosse keeps users abreast of the precise time. The clock\'s built-in antenna receives radio signals from the United States Atomic Clock in Fort Collins, Colorado and automatically resets the time according to these transmissions. Accurate to 1/100 of a second, the clock adjusts automatically for daylight savings time. The wall clock also relays the date, day of the week, and the indoor temperature.
The clock features a simple, silver rectangular frame that is equipped for both wall hanging and tabletop placement. On its 2-1/5-inch-high LCD screen, the clock conveys time by the hour, minute, and second in jumbo-sized digits for easy readability, great for those with limited eyesight. An AM/PM notification informs of morning or evening hours. To express the date, the clock displays the month and day in the lower left corner of the screen, while the abbreviation of the day of the week is posted in the lower center. The lower right corner reports the indoor temperature to the tenth of a degree; the user selects between Celsius and Fahrenheit readings. For operation, the clock requires two AA alkaline batteries. A limited one-year warranty covers this item. The clock measures 8-3/5 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 9-1/5 inches high. The clock weighs 2 pounds upon shipping.

La Crosse Technology WS-7014CH-IT Wireless Forecast Station Review

La Crosse Technology WS-7014CH-IT Wireless Forecast Station

I bought this station about 6 months ago. It was very easy to set up, and has been working perfectly ever since. Having one reliable atomic clock in the house is useful, as all appliances drift somewhat, and so do mechanical watches. The wireless remote temperature sensor has also been working reliably. I just placed in under a bench on the deck, and it has survived so far (in the wet Seattle climate).
Also, the station has a memory for highest/lowest temperatures (one for the station, one for the remote sensor), which is nice when you want to know exactly how hot/cold it got last night.
I haven't been using the weather forecast much, so I won't comment on it.
I still haven't had to change the batteries (almost 6 months of use by now).
Altogether, I'm very happy with the purchase (less than $35), and would recommend this unit to anyone looking for an inexpensive atomic clock/temperature sensor combo.

I recieved this weather station for my birthday, and overall impressed with the looks, accuracy, and size of display. I have 5 other weather stations to compare readings, and this weather station is dead accurite. Even fallows the local weather station readings to the nearest millibar. It is hard to figure out the P.M.C.E time zones since the switch is integrated in the - button, but once you figure it out its easy. The transmitter workes better that described. Seems to have a stronger range than specified. I have the sensor located at the opposite side of the house through 6 walls, and signals are still good. I am very pleased.
Highly recommended.

When I first tried to get it going I had a lot of difficulty getting the remote and the main station to sync up.
After I got it going the remote temp was off by about 8-15 degrees consistantly showing it to be warmer outside than it really was. I tried it in numerous locations to make sure I was getting accurate readings unlike the IPCC weather stations positioned near A/C units and such.
So it appears the La Crosse is some sort of global warming support instrument that consistantly shows hotter out than it really is.
Also, I emailed the company about problems and didn't hear back in the similar fashion that Al Gore eludes all debate challenges.

T. Weather Station Wind Sensor Review

I purchased the Taylor Wireless Weather Station with Anemometer on line and not directly from Taylor's site. At first, the unit seemed to work fine. I liked the appearance and found the setup to be reasonable. Unfortunately, after a few weeks, the anemometer no longer provided accurate readings. I contacted Taylor and they offered to send a replacement unit after I returned the original to them. They were friendly and efficient. Again, unfortunately, the replacement unit only functioned for a few weeks before giving erroneous temperature readings. Again Taylor replaced the unit, free of charge, and even paid the return shipping this time. The third unit had the same anemometer problems as the first unit had had. By this time I requested a refund. Taylor said they would not provide a refund because I had not purchased the original unit directly from them. Thus, I was stuck with a useless weather station. I would not recommend anyone purchasing this item.

Timex TX5170 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Indoor Hygrometer and Clock Review

Timex TX5170 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Indoor Hygrometer and Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After one week of normal use the Timex TX5170 stopped functioning: The readout displayed random digits. The battery tested fine (1.5 volts on my voltmeter), but I decided to give the TX5170 the benefit of the doubt, so I went out and bought a new alkaline AAA battery and installed it. And, lo and behold, the TX5170 sprang back to life -- for six hours. Then it gave up the ghost completely. Installing ANOTHER new alkaline battery did no good.
I once met a retired advertising executive who purported to be the guy who came up with Timex's classic slogan, "It Takes A Licking But Keeps on Ticking." My problems with the Timex TX5170 recalled this slogan to my mind. "Perhaps that's the problem," I said to myself. So I covered the TX5170 with chocolate syrup and proceed to lick it. Alas, still only random digits in the readout. [Just kidding.]
The online product description states that the TX5170 is covered by "Timex's one-year warranty." That sounds good, only the "instruction manual" included with the unit does not mention a warranty, nor does it provide any contact information for the manufacture. The fine print on the back of the unit itself states that it was manufactured in China for the Maverick Corporation of Edison, New Jersey, and that the name "Timex" is used under license in the United States and certain other territories.
Very helpful.
So the question is, how much time and effort am I going to expend to gain satisfaction for a non-functioning fifteen dollar thermometer?

They say it's not the heat, but the humidity. Well fret not, because the versatile Timex TX5170 electronic thermometer displays both at the same time. The compact unit--which sits unobtrusively on a desktop, table, or shelf--sports a three-line LCD panel with bold, conspicuous readouts. The top line displays the indoor temperature, the middle line displays the outdoor temperature, and the bottom line shows either the indoor relative humidity or the time, depending in your preference. As a result, you can instantly gauge whether to wear shorts or pants on a seemingly mild summer day, make sure the humidity level is correct in the greenhouse, or crank the air conditioner as the afternoon progresses. The temperature readings range from 32 to 122 degrees F (0 to 50 degrees C) for the indoor temperature to -4 to 158 degrees F (-20 to 50 degrees C) for the outdoor temperature. The relative humidity, meanwhile, is measured on a scale of 20 to 90 percent, with the hygrometer performing best between 40 and 70 percent.
The display is remarkably easy to read--even from across the room--thanks to the bold digits and crisp readout. At the same time, the TX5170 includes an integral minimum/maximum memory function that records the high and low temperatures of the day. The values are available at the push of a button, with a second button clearing and resetting the memory on command. Best of all, the unit is notably compact at 2.88 by 5.44 by 0.81 inches (W x H x D), making it a great choice for home offices, backyard greenhouses, and everywhere in between.
The TX5170 comes with a wired, weather-resistant temperature probe (with a 10-foot cord) for gauging the outdoor temperature, along with an integral folding stand. Because of the wired probe, the main unit will need to located near a window to enjoy the outdoor temperature functions. And should you want to mount the unit on a wall rather than place it on a shelf or desk, simply suspend it from its rear hanger hole (you'll need to provide the nail or screw). As a final bonus, the TX5170 is streamlined and attractive, with a sleek white plastic housing and a snazzy seven-button control panel on the front.
The TX5170 requires a single AAA battery (not included) and is backed by a one-year warranty.
What's in the Box Base station, wired weather sensor with 10-foot cord, integral folding stand, user's manual.

The Acu-rite clock works very well however, the wireless RF sensor that you place outdoors is not good at all. The very first time you open it to put the batteries in, the screws (4) strip. My first one lasted only about 3 months but I was able to order another one. It cost more than the clock itself though. The same thing happened. I unscrewed the 4 screws to put the AAA batteries in it and the screw holes stripped. This one lasted about 6 months however, It stopped working again and I can no longer find any place to order just the RF transmitter. The inside temp, clock, and date work fine, but I cannot get the outside temperature. It is very frustrating.

This wireless clock and thermometer with radio controlled clock technology keeps you on time and abreast of the weather conditions so you know when it\'s time to head out the door and how to dress when you do. Equipped with a receiver that picks up signals from the official U.S. Atomic Clock transmitter, the clock keeps in sync with the exact time so there\'s no need for setting, even after it\'s unplugged or for Daylight Savings Time, which disables where DST isn\'t used.
The digital clock displays time in hour, minutes, and seconds on the large, easy-to-read display. The device also shows 12- to 24-hour weather forecast icons that indicate weather ahead: sunny, cloudy, rainy… The display also shows date with year and both indoor and outdoor temperatures and humidity levels. Outdoor temperatures are gauged with the included wireless transmitter that installs on walls and horizontal surfaces up to 100 feet away.
More great features included a weather trend indicator that lets you know if temps are on the rise or going back down relative to the previous hour\'s data.Time format is user-selectable for 12-hour or 24-hour modes. And temps are displayed in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. The main receiver display console features 3 channels for receiving weather data from up to two more sensors, making it easy to monitor conditions in the baby\'s room, wine cellar, greenhouse and more. A low-battery icon appears when batteries in clock need to be replaced. And the outdoor temperature digits flash when batteries in remote sensor for indicated channel need to be replaced.
The main console requires three AA (1.5V) alkaline batteries, and remote requires two AAA (1.5V) alkaline batteries (batteries are not included). Both clock and remote can be wall-mounted or free-standing. Chaney backs the purchase with a 1-year warranty.

Chaney Instrument Wireless Rain Gauge w/ Monitor Review

Chaney Instrument Wireless Rain Gauge w/ Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everything about this remote rain gauge is fine, except that it wouldn't transmit data remotely from outside the house. I suspect that the rain gauge has difficulty sending the remote signal through the walls of a house -- which is what you need to do! I could get the unit to work fine with both the gauge and the base unit in the house, but I could not get a transmission from outside the house to inside.
I followed up with Cheney Customer service and found that the device will not transmit through the metal or brick of house frames. This limitation should be prominently mentioned on the box!
Other than that, there are battery indicators for the both base and gauge, settable millimetres (0.0) or inches (0.00), and a large display of the rainfall. I really wish that the system worked. It would be fine if it could transmit the remote signal to the base unit.

I can't begin to tell you the abuse I've subjected this product to.
1- Used it on my RV. Probe was outside from freezing to desert for 6000 miles.
2- Took it up to Alaska and back, 15,000 miles.
3- Used it to determine the temp. of my developing solution (very caustic chemicals).
4- Now it's being pecked by chickens in my brooder.
I seem to never replace batteries in this. I can only remember doing it twice in 6 years.

Keep track of the time, as well as the temperature, with this straightforward thermometer clock. From Oregon Scientific, the thermometer clock allows users to plan outdoor activities appropriately while monitoring the indoor climate for maximum comfort. Additionally, the clock can serve as an alarm for early morning wake-ups and reminders.
The thermometer clock features preinstalled holes for wall mounting, as well as a plastic stand for tabletop placement. In large, easy to read digits, the thermometer clock relates the time and temperatures on its LCD screen, with a blue LED backlight for nighttime viewing. The user sets the time and alarm clock using the hour, minute, and alarm buttons on the backside of the thermometer clock. The user also can select between 12-hour or 24-hour time format and Fahrenheit or Celsius degree temperature display by flipping the provided switches. Three buttons on the front side of the thermometer clock engage the alarm\'s 8-minute snooze function, switches the mode, and enables the user to view and clear the high/low temperature recordings in the memory function. Additional Wireless Water Temperature Monitor Review

Additional Wireless Water Temperature Monitor
Average Reviews:

I'm on the 3rd pool sensor. I took steps to protect the second unit by putting silicone sealant around the seam next to the rubber ring. This lasted longer, almost a year, but it still developed a leak right onto the circuit board and was also destroyed! So I finally discovered that the leak also appears to be coming from the seam at the top where the Antenna's grey rubber cover meets the plastic enclosure. Other reviewers are also having the same leak problems if you check out the other reviews on this product. I keep replacing the sensor because so far I haven't been able to find a nicer pool temperature sensor. The manufacturer, Minder Research Inc. is apparently aware of the leaky design problem: the warranty paper says "All RS888 transmitters are 100% pressure tested and are not guaranteed if it stops operating due to water damage."

La Crosse Technology WS-9037U-IT Wireless Forecast Station with Pressure History Review

La Crosse Technology WS-9037U-IT Wireless Forecast Station with Pressure History
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My 10 year old, cheapo Weather Channel indoor/outdoor thermometer finally wasn't cutting the mustard any more. It frequently was unable to update the outdoor temperature. And then, when it did so, sometimes it read interesting things like 138 degrees. Now, it can get warm in the mid-Atlantic, but it only gets that hot inside cars on the hottest days.
I initially thought to upgrade the failing unit a little bit ... perhaps double the cost. However, there was nothing in that mid-cost range that appealed to me aesthetically and had the feature set I wanted. Many of the units had either a bikini-clad figure or a dopey looking guy. Huh? Has the Apple dumbing-down of GUIs infiltrated EVERYWHERE? Yikes.
I finally found this unit, which actually shows clouds, sun, and a combination of that to represent weather trends. Imagine.
After a couple of weeks of use, here is my take on this device:
PROS: easy to set the settings, good feature set, bright easy to read display with nice large characters, very accurate readings (Swiss made sensors)
CONS: pain in the arse to add devices or change batteries (you have to power up devices in a specific order, or start from scratch and do it over), prediction sometimes misses badly since it seems to be solely pressure-based and seems to need a wide threshold to predict bad weather, really bad mount for the outdoor/remote sensor (almost impossible to use double-side tape ... they almost force you to use the screws to wall mount)
The good feature set includes: atomic clock sets itself from the NIST atomic clock in Colorado; high quality Swiss made sensors, very accurate; multiple contrast levels on the display, as well as a backlight; prediction function (even if it is a little off now and then), and support for multiple sensors.
You have to power up the remote sensors first, and within a specific time frame, then the main unit, also within a specific time from when you powered up the remote sensors. You'll need to do this with them all together in the same room. Then you can put your remote sensors where you want them. To add a sensor later, you'll have to pull the batteries from all the sensors and the main unit, and repower everything in the correct order.
The mount for the remote sensor is a small bracket (it doubles as a stand as shown in the photo). My previous one, the mount was basically as large as the whole sensor, and you could stick it to your vinyl siding with double-sided tape. This mount makes that almost impossible: there are 2 screw holes and the rest of the back of the bracket is recessed. Nothing to stick tape onto. Sorry LaCrosse, I can't put screws into my siding and expect them to hold. Bad redesign.
However, don't let this frustration sway you too negatively. This is a really great weather station, with excellent temperature and humidity sensors, a great main unit, great feature set. It just has a poor mounting bracket for the remote sensor.

Prepare for shifting weather with this versatile wireless forecast station. From La Crosse Technology, the WS-9037U forecast station anticipates changing weather based on barometric pressure readings and outdoor temperatures, collected along with outdoor humidity levels by a remote TX29UDTH-IT thermo-hygro sensor. Three weather icons predict sunny, partly cloudy, or rainy conditions, while a tendency arrow indicates barometric shifts. For household comfort, the forecast station monitors indoor conditions.
