Acurite Deluxe Wireless Weather Center Review

I love the layout of the screen. It is very easy to read at a glance, plus it shows exactly what's important to me: temperature, humidity, air pressure, date and time. It is very easy to set the date and time and other options. The blue backlighting is beautiful. The option to hang or use with the included stand is great. The transmitter and main unit use AA batteries, which are readily available. I had no idea that the outdoor humidity levels fluctuated as much as they do throughout the day/night until I got this weather center. The whole unit is a little larger than I was expecting, and the weather forecast is not very accurate even though it has learned over the past 14 days, but I still think this weather center is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone.

La Crosse Technology 4 Day Talking Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster - Choose Finish Review

La Crosse Technology 4 Day Talking Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster - Choose Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LaCrosse recently migrated their servers from Germany to the US and during that whole time the device has not worked. I talked to the person who headed up the migration and he himself told me that he was the only one on the migration and that he had no extra help and that the company had no rollback plan or "plan b". Clearly this was a cost-cutting move that has rendered all of their "talking" devices useless and actually dangerous (socially not physically). What I mean is that my daughters were already late to school 3 times because the alarm not only failed to get the audio but the backup system (it was supposed to at least beep when no audio file was received) also was disabled by the error so the alarm does nothing. At least if they are going to mess up the audio file don't render the alarm completely mute.
To make matters worse is they have not been honest with their users. Their update messages on the site about system status all claim things like:
"We're very pleased to note that the WD customer base continues to grow, even faster this holiday season. If you have a Weather Direct model that offers audible forecasts, you may notice that although the visible forecast data updates regularly, a manual update is sometimes required to retrieve the spoken forecast (press and hold the SNOOZE button until the unit beeps). This is a side effect of increased volume on the system, and will be resolved as soon as possible. With most other issues, the Weather Direct units usually self-recover without user intervention if they remain connected.:
Well three things:
1. I've had this problem for months so unless the holiday season includes Labor Day I think this is just a thinly described excuse for the fact that they are still having server migration issues.
2. So how helpful is that that you need to manually update the audio. First of all should I have to make sure the device has the audio before I go to sleep? Second, even if I wanted the hassle it updates overnight and during the update it fails to get the audio update and the device goes silent (as per the note above) so you don't have an alarm anyway.
3. Their own instructions are wrong. You actually have to hold the SNOOZE button until the unit beeps TWICE. The first beep won't do it (yes I have read the instructions in detail). Also if you do hold it down for 2 beeps that also doesn't work either. it will go throught the update cycle but it doesn't bring down the audio. You'll notice that the reception indicator will be one "dot" and not one "dot" and three "semicircle" lines that indicate a good signal eventhough you are right next to the broadcasting unit.
So the combination of a shoddy product, an underfunded backend system (which this device is heavily dependent on) and thinly disguised excuses makes for a bad company you should steer clear of. There are other weather devices out there (Oregon ScientificOregon Scientific BAR388HGA Wireless Weather Station with Atomic Clock, Black, HoneywellHoneywell TN924W Weather Information Station, Black) so I would look at those instead. Please note LaCrosse Technology and Weather Direct are the same company so avoid products from both if you share these concerns.

With this talking La Crosse Technology internet-powered wireless forecaster, one no longer needs to wait for the TV weather reporter to hear the local weather. The Weather Direct WA-1240U-WAL four-day forecaster provides free weather forecasts sent directly from the internet to the unit for audio broadcast and viewing. By pushing the audio forecast key on the top back of the display, a male or female voice shares a personalized message with the selected location\'s daily weather, chosen from over 60,000 US and Canadian locations. The A/B/C keys broadcast custom audio feeds of news headlines, entertainment, health, and more. To transmit internet forecasts, an AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router. Additionally, a TX-50U wireless outdoor sensor measures temperatures right outside the front door.
The display stands alone or wall hangs. The selected location, location forecast, sunrise and sunset times, and outdoor temperature scroll across the bottom LCD section. In the center section, eighteen different icons and projected high and low temperatures forecast the next four days\' weather, updating every six hours. Internet-set time, date, and alarm indicator occupy the top LCD. For contrast and scrolling-speed adjustment, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection, and micro forecasts for morning, afternoon, evening, and night, the display proffers the SET and MODE keys with the audio keys. The user adjusts broadcast volume, sets the alarm, and activates the five-minute snooze with keys on the top front of the display. Both the gateway and sensor communicate from 330 feet unobstructed and come with mounting hardware. To operate the forecaster, no additional software or Wi-Fi connection is required, nor does the computer need to be on. However, high-speed internet service, a network router, and the separate purchase of three C and two AA batteries are necessary. A limited one-year warranty covers the forecaster.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3308U-WAL 4 Day Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3308U-WAL 4 Day Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster
Average Reviews:

I like the way this unit gathers all the information from the internet without needing your computer running. All the important information is there. However the presentation is poor. The three day advance weather forecast is displayed in the middle, therefore there is no need to have it scroll across the bottom which is hard to read. It comes with an outside temp probe but you can not display the outside temp easily, you have to wait till it scrolls across the bottom. The daily forecast is broken up in AM PM Evening etc. However it would be nice if it changed with current time of day, but it doesn't you have to cycle through it manually. Too much scrolling and not a constant display of current conditions. It's a shame, it has all the information you would want, but just does a poor job of displaying it. I returned it.

Bushnell 7-Day Hunt Fxi Internet Weather Forecaster (Green) Review

Bushnell 7-Day Hunt Fxi Internet Weather Forecaster (Green)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This will not hold up to the riggers of hunting, camping, or just plain living room use. Why? It's quite cheaply made, not resistant to anything one might regularly encounter while hunting or camping which is why I also said it won't hold up for plain use. If you have a hunting or camping buddy, they'll torment you so much that you have this junk that you'll knock it off a 2 foot table and it will irreparably break. It's just that cheap.
During setup you're supposed to enter the country and state and then county. You can select from US or Canada. I selected US and then, since I hunt on the Eastern shore of Maryland for waterfowl, I tried to find Maryland under the 'states' menus. Maryland DOES NOT EXIST? No way - I thought, so I downloaded from Bushnell its latest software update - apparently Maryland has succeeded from Bushnell's reference of States of the Union.
This item is useless for me for either camping or hunting, it's sitting upstairs just pulling in the outdoors city weather and casting a glow in the living room so that I don't have to burn out the bulb in my night-light.
Oh, and one more thing, this unit receives its weather updates ONLY from the computer that its USB transmitter is installed on. In other words, if you were thinking of taking just the portable, battery operated (makes you think it can go in the woods, eh?) hunting, the Weather info is as olf as it was when you went 275 feet out of range of the computer's USB transmitter.

La Crosse Technology WS-7049U-MAH Wireless Weather Station Review

La Crosse Technology WS-7049U-MAH Wireless Weather Station
Average Reviews:

When I first tried to get it going I had a lot of difficulty getting the remote and the main station to sync up.
After I got it going the remote temp was off by about 8-15 degrees consistantly showing it to be warmer outside than it really was. I tried it in numerous locations to make sure I was getting accurate readings unlike the IPCC weather stations positioned near A/C units and such.
So it appears the La Crosse is some sort of global warming support instrument that consistantly shows hotter out than it really is.
Also, I emailed the company about problems and didn't hear back in the similar fashion that Al Gore eludes all debate challenges.

La Crosse Technology WS-9007U-IT Wireless Thermometer Review

La Crosse Technology WS-9007U-IT Wireless Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a neat and very inexpensive unit. Receiver seems to be a solid unit. I got mine at Kohl's during a closeout sale for about $7.50. I place transmitter in garage to measure temp during winter, as I work out there a lot. Seems to be very accurate and has an easy to read display. Important, however, do not loose instructions, may need later for setup.
Outside temp display may stop working unless a reset sequence is followed closely. If battery's are changed or transmission of signal is interrupted for only a brief moment, you MUST follow reset and setup instructions again to get units in sync once more. Not difficult or hard to do, just need to be aware of this little requirement. Reason stated is a random security transmitter code is used to communicate between units and a reset sequence must occur to BOTH units, within a 3 MINUTE time frame, to get combo back in sync again. For the price you can't go wrong!

Stay informed about current indoor and outdoor temperatures with this wireless thermometer. From La Crosse Technology, the WS-9007U thermometer monitors the indoor and outdoor temperatures while it also keeps track of both environments\' minimum and maximum temperatures.
The thermometer\'s receiver features a white plastic casing. Equipped with a hanging hole for wall mounting, the receiver also comes with a foldout stand for upright tabletop display. The LCD conveys the temperatures in large, easy-to-read digits. At the top of the screen, an IN or OUT icon signifies which environment\'s temperature is being displayed. The presence of a MIN icon at the bottom of the screen denotes the temperature as the lowest recorded temperature for the selected environment, while a MAX icon denotes the temperature as the highest recorded value. To toggle between the minimum, maximum, and current temperature readings for indoors and outdoors, the user employs the straightforward two-button interface. MIN/MAX recordings can be reset. With all temperatures provided in Fahrenheit to the tenth of a degree, the thermometer evaluates outdoor temperatures ranging from -19.9 to 140 degrees F and indoor temperatures from 14.1 to 140 degrees F. The included TX38U-IT remote sensor transmits outdoor temperatures to the receiver at a 915 MHz frequency from up to 260 feet away unobstructed; the thermometer only accommodates one sensor. Using the mounting bracket, install the sensor out of direct rain or sunlight for successful operation. The separate purchase of two AAA and two AA batteries is required. This item is covered by a limited one-year warranty. The thermometer receiver measures approximately 3 inches wide by 1-1/6 inches deep by 3-5/6 inches high. The sensor measures 1-1/4 inches wide by 1/2 inch deep by 3-2/5 inches high.

With all the information it has to display, I was expecting it to be a bit bigger, it's a little smaller than a 4x6 index card, but I can read it from several feet away so I am happy with it. I'm using the remote sensor in another room my office and it picks up fine going through several walls in our office building. I have the main unit near a window and the time stays in sync w/o any issues picking up the radio signal. The temperature readings appear to be accurate.

I purchased this item to replace a five-years old LaCrosse instrument that had stopped working. From the time I opened the box, I was unable to make the remote sensor/transmitter mate up to the receiver/display unit. After many attempts over several weeks, I gave up and returned the unit for refund. I have no way to know whether it was the unit itself, or the location where I was using it. LaCrosse makes many fine instruments, but I am disappointed with this one.

Check wind conditions before heading to the park to fly a kite with this wireless professional weather center from La Crosse Technology. Complete with wind and air pressure measurements, the WS-1912U weather center offers up-to-date weather data, as well as forecasts to allow better preparation for outdoors activities. The weather center also holds up to 140 sets of weather data, with minimum and maximum temperature, humidity, and air pressure recordings every 3 hours.
The black-framed receiver mounts on a wall or stands alone. On its eight-level contrast LCD screen, the receiver displays the time in 12- or 24-hour format, date, indoor temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius degrees, and outdoor conditions and forecast. The user manually sets the date and time and change weather display options using four function buttons on the back of the receiver. Based on the sensor\'s barometric pressure readings, the receiver presents air pressure data, including a historical bar graph and an air pressure tendency arrow. Three icons indicate the forecasted sky conditions. In the event of inclement weather, the receiver features a storm warning alert. Connected by a cable to the thermo-hygro sensor for power and data transmission, a TX55U wind sensor analyzes wind chill, speed, and dew point. La Crosse Technology Weather Direct TX60U-SET Online Temperature and Humidity Wireless Alert System Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct TX60U-SET Online Temperature and Humidity Wireless Alert System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The idea of this product is great: Place sensors around your house (basement, garage, wine cellar, outside) and upload the temperature and humidity to the Internet, where you can check the info from wherever you are. Unfortunately, although this product sounds great it comes up short in many ways, in summary: Missing and broken parts, poor customer service, limited online functionality, and product use restrictions (not outdoors!).
A fuller review of the numerous ways this product is a failure:
1) When I received the product it was missing an AC adapter. This is an included part and required for operation of the Gateway, so pretty fundamental. No biggie, right? I'll email support. Well, I did, using the online form. But it took a week to get a response other than the automated one generated by the email server at LaCrosse. When I got a response, they said they'd ship the missing part, but provided no timetable. So I called--I spoke to a pleasant woman who told me it was a good thing I called because they didn't know what state to send the adapter to. Why not? Well, because the drop down menu on the website form does not include an entry for Washington, DC (where I live). And they couldn't be bothered to figure it out from the zipcode I supplied. The adapter took another 2 weeks to arrive--I'll give them the benefit of a couple of days because it came two days after Christmas, so may have been sitting in a USPS facility for 2-3 days.
2) With the AC adapter, I'm in business, right? Well, no, because the network (ethernet) cable was broken. I followed the online directions to setup the gateway for online access. Plug it into my router and I get a red blinking light. I check the troubleshooting guide for what this means and it's not listed anywhere. One buried instruction suggests one gets a blinking red light once the gateway has contacted the server but has yet to be set up. Not true! I did some network diagnostics to figure out the gateway was not on my network. I tried my own Cat-5 cable and that worked just fine--apparently the one included was no good (I didn't waste more time confirming if it was in fact defective, but I unplugged/replugged and tried different jacks). Finally paired the gateway with my online account.
3) So now I'm good to go? Well, sort of. I paired the remote sensor to the gateway and it started uploading data to the LaCrosse servers. Went to check the readings, and what do I get? Only the last 5 data points. That's not much, given the measurement intervals are 2, 5, 10, or 20 minutes. So at most you can see at a glance data for the last 100 minutes--not so hot. If you want more, you have to download the data in an Excel spreadsheet, which is great if you want long-term trending but not very convenient if you just want to see what temperatures have been over the last day or so. And forget about seeing multiple sensors at once--you have to click through for each one. Some points, however, for providing both a battery level and "link" quality (signal between gateway and sensor).
4) I dug a little deeper on the website to get a better feel for things. It's a terrible website. First off, even though it provides an option for "remember my password" your login times out after an hour or two, and you have to reenter your login info again to access your data. So forget about leaving a window up to check on the data. Second, it's chock-a-block with ads. I understand the need for ads on a free website, but this is a site that you've more or less paid for access to by buying the product. At a minimum, your data should be more front and center. Third, in theory LaCrosse also supports a "WeatherClub" website where you can post your data and weather conditions. But the website gives an page not found error for every page and doesn't seem to work. As other posts on this product note, LaCrosse also had some major server migration issues in recent months. Overall, the website gave me little confidence that it will be supported, or even around, in a few months. And since data access is provided solely through a website, if the website is gone you've basically got bricks.
5) Finally, a word about the sensor quality and functionality. First, if you plan to use this to monitor outside temperature and humidity, forget it. The sensor is not waterproof and cannot be exposed to rain (fog and mist are okay though!!). So, indoors only. Also, I realize that for $30/sensor you're not getting scientific calibration. But why do the probe and the sensor differ in temperature readings by .5 degree or more regularly, even when they're inches apart?
I really had high hopes for this product. The concept is great, the price is reasonable, but the execution, customer service, and backend support all are sorely lacking.

While it is impossible to be in two places at once, it is possible to monitor a remote location\'s current temperature and humidity level with this online wireless alert system from La Crosse Technology. The TX60U-IT system uses a thermo-hygro sensor with a 6-foot water-resistant probe to collect environmental data to transmit to the system\'s Weather Direct Gateway. Connected to a network router with the included LAN cable, the Gateway uploads the sensor\'s measurements to the user\'s account at www.weatherdirect.com. Online, the user creates custom alert parameters for e-mail and text message alerts in the event that the remote location\'s temperature or humidity level goes above or below the user-defined conditions. Offered for one year free with purchase, this alert service is great for ensuring a pet\'s wellbeing at home on hot days, guaranteeing atmospheric stability at warehouses with particular temperature or humidity needs, or for protecting seedlings from frost in greenhouses. The probe comes in useful for monitoring an aquarium\'s water conditions, soil temperatures, or home brewing.
Equipped with a LCD for on-site readings, the sensor communicates with the gateway from up to 200 feet unobstructed. The sensor and probe analyze outdoor temperatures from -40 to 140 degrees F and relative humidity levels from 3 to 99 percent. While fog- and mist-resistant, the sensor is not waterproof and should be sheltered from rainfall and direct sunlight. A mounting bracket for wall hanging or free-standing installation comes with the sensor. The sensor requires two separately-purchase AAA batteries; the gateway is powered with an AC adapter. For operation, this system necessitates a computer, network router, high-speed internet access, e-mail account, and a program capable of viewing Microsoft Excel formatted files. A one-year warranty covers this item. The sensor measures 1-1/2 inches wide by 3/4 inch deep by 5-1/4 inches high.

La Crosse Technology WS-811561-W atomic digital wall clock with solar-powered sensor Review

La Crosse Technology WS-811561-W atomic digital wall clock with solar-powered sensor
Average Reviews:

Not much to say except that it does exactly what it's supposed to do. I love the solar powered sensor that shows the temp and the clock picked up the "atomic" time within just a few minutes. Setup was a breeze and I had everything up and running really quickly. The only reason for 4 stars is that something inside the clock seems to have come loose/broken and rattles around inside, but it still seems to work fine.

This WS-811561 atomic digital wall clock and temperature station from La Crosse Technology not only conveys the precise time and date, but also informs users of current indoor and outdoor temperatures. Radio-controlled by WWVB radio transmissions from the national atomic clock in Fort Collins, CO, the clock regularly resets time for increased accuracy and adapts automatically for daylight savings time. A solar-powered TX61U-IT outdoor sensor transmits temperatures at 915 MHz from up to 200 feet from the clock\'s wireless display.
Housed in white plastic, the clock display benefits hanging holes for easy mounting, as well as fold-out legs for free-standing tabletop placement. The LCD relates the time in either a 12-hour or 24-hour format. Along the bottom of the screen, the clock reports the date, day of week, current indoor temperatures ranging from 14.2 to 99.9 degrees F, and current outdoor temperatures ranging from -39.8 to 139.8 degrees F. English, French, German, and Spanish languages are available for day display, and temperatures can be viewed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit degrees. Using the function buttons on the back, the user selects the appropriate time zone, deactivates the auto DST feature, and sets the alarm and its 10-minute snooze. To ensure accurate outdoor temperatures, do not place the sensor in direct sunlight as that skews its measuring capabilities. The sensor\'s built-in rechargeable battery pack maintains a full charge with minimum indirect light to its solar panel; install in an east-facing location if possible, and shelter from rainfall. For display operation, the separate purchase of two AA batteries is required. A limited one-year warranty covers this item. The clock measures 9 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 7-1/5 inches high, while the sensor measures 1-3/4 inches wide by 1 inch deep by 4 inches high.

I bought one of these units last christmas and the weather is always about 10 degrees off - year round. I have contacted them numerous times and you can never get through (due to overwhelming demand they say - probably due to all the complaints). Through email they tell me that they are resubmitting information to their meteorologist. I don't understand why they can't figure out the weather when I can go to any weather website and get the correct weather. They keep emailing updates that their meteoroligist is working on it. It has been almost a year and they still can't figure out how to make the unit tell the right weather.

Ambient Weather SRS100LX Temperature and Humidity Solar Radiation Shield Review

Ambient Weather SRS100LX Temperature and Humidity Solar Radiation Shield
Average Reviews:

After years of unreliable temperature readings because of the sun I had resigned myself to constructing an enclosure out of wooden shutters. On a lark I searched on the web and found this Radiation sheild. It was a breeze to assemble and now my temperature sensor is providing an accurate reading when it is in the sun.

The SRS100LX temperature and humidity radiation shield is a low cost solution for protecting temperature and relative humidity sensors. It consists of nine molded plastic plates and an UV inhibited ABS plastic mounting arm. The wedge-shaped plates provide maximum airflow around the sensor while at the same time minimizing direct exposure to sunlight. The passive shield is shaped to allow natural air convection around the sensor so that the air temperature inside the shield is a good representation of the outside air. The shield also provides protection from rain and snow. The SRS100LX radiation shield fits most temperature and humidity sensors sold by Ambient Weather. Order the SRS100 for smaller sensor installations (reference dimensions below). The SRS100LX is designed with a highly reflective white surface to reflect the sun's direct radiation. The multi-plate design allows for maximum airflow. The UV inhibited ABS plastic mounting arm can be mounted to any vertical surface. U-Bolts are included to mount to any pole.Compatible Sensors*: RTGR328NA, TX50U-IT, TX13U, TX6U, TX7U, TX4U, TX18U, TX8U, TX9U, WS2010-22, WS2010-25, WS2010-28, WS2310-25, TX21U-IT, TX25U-IT, TX27U-IT, TX28U-IT, TX29U-IT, TX37U-IT, TX29UDTH-IT, TX22U-IT, and other sensors from different manufacturers are also compatible with the SRS100 *Some sensors require the removal of mounting bracket or aesthetic covers to fit within the inner cavity of the SRS100 (WxLxH): 2.5" x 4.3" x 7.4".

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WA-1440U 4-Day Talking Internet-Powered Wireless Forecaster Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WA-1440U 4-Day Talking Internet-Powered Wireless Forecaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Weather Direct offers some interesting technology, it fails flat out when it comes to delivering on that technology.
The WA-1440U fails more than not to connect and update with the Weather Direct servers, and the included TX-50U outdoor temperature sensor has a mind of its own. It works when it feels like working, and the rest of the time, you get nothing except dashes for the outdoor temperature on the display.
I have tried many times to set my preferred audio broadcasts, and performed many manual updates, but so far have failed to receive any of the audio information.
Sure, I paid only about $8.95 for the whole package at Radio Shack (it was clearance), but the system is not worth the cost of the batteries I had to purchase for it.
Unless LaCrosse Technologies gets its act together, I would not recommend anyone to purchase any Weather Direct devices at any price. Perhaps things will be straightened out eventually, but considering the trouble I am having with the basic technology (like the wireless sensor transmitting its data to the gateway and/or the display), I don't think this is going to happen.

With this talking La Crosse Technology internet-powered wireless forecaster, one no longer needs to wait for the TV weather reporter to hear the local weather. The Weather Direct WA-1440U four-day forecaster provides free weather forecasts sent directly from the internet to the unit for viewing and audio broadcast. By pushing the audio forecast key on top of the sleek black display, a male or female voice shares the selected location\'s daily weather, chosen from over 60,000 US and Canadian locations. The A/B/C keys broadcast custom audio feeds of news headlines, sports, and more. To transmit internet forecasts, an AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router. Additionally, a TX-50U wireless outdoor sensor measures temperatures right outside the front door.
The display stands upright or wall hangs. Function keys on top of the display enable LCD contrast, scrolling-speed, and volume adjustments, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection, alarm setting, five-minute snooze activation, and viewing micro forecasts for morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Accompanied by mounting hardware, both the gateway and sensor communicate from 330 feet unobstructed. To operate the forecaster, no additional software or Wi-Fi connection is required, nor does the computer need to be on. However, high-speed internet service, a network router, and the separate purchase of three C and two AA batteries are necessary. A limited one-year warranty covers the forecaster.

The transmitter did not work on the first unit ordered. The second unit would receive the outside temperature only intermitently, even when the transmitter was next to the display. I purchased it as a gift for an older person that cannot see well or change batteries. If this had worked consistently it would have been a good gift. The good news is that Amazon made returning them hassle free.
