Acurite Deluxe Wireless Weather Center Review

Acurite Deluxe Wireless Weather Center

I love the layout of the screen. It is very easy to read at a glance, plus it shows exactly what's important to me: temperature, humidity, air pressure, date and time. It is very easy to set the date and time and other options. The blue backlighting is beautiful. The option to hang or use with the included stand is great. The transmitter and main unit use AA batteries, which are readily available. I had no idea that the outdoor humidity levels fluctuated as much as they do throughout the day/night until I got this weather center. The whole unit is a little larger than I was expecting, and the weather forecast is not very accurate even though it has learned over the past 14 days, but I still think this weather center is fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone.

La Crosse Technology 4 Day Talking Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster - Choose Finish Review

La Crosse Technology 4 Day Talking Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster - Choose Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LaCrosse recently migrated their servers from Germany to the US and during that whole time the device has not worked. I talked to the person who headed up the migration and he himself told me that he was the only one on the migration and that he had no extra help and that the company had no rollback plan or "plan b". Clearly this was a cost-cutting move that has rendered all of their "talking" devices useless and actually dangerous (socially not physically). What I mean is that my daughters were already late to school 3 times because the alarm not only failed to get the audio but the backup system (it was supposed to at least beep when no audio file was received) also was disabled by the error so the alarm does nothing. At least if they are going to mess up the audio file don't render the alarm completely mute.
To make matters worse is they have not been honest with their users. Their update messages on the site about system status all claim things like:
"We're very pleased to note that the WD customer base continues to grow, even faster this holiday season. If you have a Weather Direct model that offers audible forecasts, you may notice that although the visible forecast data updates regularly, a manual update is sometimes required to retrieve the spoken forecast (press and hold the SNOOZE button until the unit beeps). This is a side effect of increased volume on the system, and will be resolved as soon as possible. With most other issues, the Weather Direct units usually self-recover without user intervention if they remain connected.:
Well three things:
1. I've had this problem for months so unless the holiday season includes Labor Day I think this is just a thinly described excuse for the fact that they are still having server migration issues.
2. So how helpful is that that you need to manually update the audio. First of all should I have to make sure the device has the audio before I go to sleep? Second, even if I wanted the hassle it updates overnight and during the update it fails to get the audio update and the device goes silent (as per the note above) so you don't have an alarm anyway.
3. Their own instructions are wrong. You actually have to hold the SNOOZE button until the unit beeps TWICE. The first beep won't do it (yes I have read the instructions in detail). Also if you do hold it down for 2 beeps that also doesn't work either. it will go throught the update cycle but it doesn't bring down the audio. You'll notice that the reception indicator will be one "dot" and not one "dot" and three "semicircle" lines that indicate a good signal eventhough you are right next to the broadcasting unit.
So the combination of a shoddy product, an underfunded backend system (which this device is heavily dependent on) and thinly disguised excuses makes for a bad company you should steer clear of. There are other weather devices out there (Oregon ScientificOregon Scientific BAR388HGA Wireless Weather Station with Atomic Clock, Black, HoneywellHoneywell TN924W Weather Information Station, Black) so I would look at those instead. Please note LaCrosse Technology and Weather Direct are the same company so avoid products from both if you share these concerns.

With this talking La Crosse Technology internet-powered wireless forecaster, one no longer needs to wait for the TV weather reporter to hear the local weather. The Weather Direct WA-1240U-WAL four-day forecaster provides free weather forecasts sent directly from the internet to the unit for audio broadcast and viewing. By pushing the audio forecast key on the top back of the display, a male or female voice shares a personalized message with the selected location\'s daily weather, chosen from over 60,000 US and Canadian locations. The A/B/C keys broadcast custom audio feeds of news headlines, entertainment, health, and more. To transmit internet forecasts, an AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router. Additionally, a TX-50U wireless outdoor sensor measures temperatures right outside the front door.
The display stands alone or wall hangs. The selected location, location forecast, sunrise and sunset times, and outdoor temperature scroll across the bottom LCD section. In the center section, eighteen different icons and projected high and low temperatures forecast the next four days\' weather, updating every six hours. Internet-set time, date, and alarm indicator occupy the top LCD. For contrast and scrolling-speed adjustment, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection, and micro forecasts for morning, afternoon, evening, and night, the display proffers the SET and MODE keys with the audio keys. The user adjusts broadcast volume, sets the alarm, and activates the five-minute snooze with keys on the top front of the display. Both the gateway and sensor communicate from 330 feet unobstructed and come with mounting hardware. To operate the forecaster, no additional software or Wi-Fi connection is required, nor does the computer need to be on. However, high-speed internet service, a network router, and the separate purchase of three C and two AA batteries are necessary. A limited one-year warranty covers the forecaster.

Davis Instruments 6250 Vantage Vue Wireless Weather Station Review

Davis Instruments 6250 Vantage Vue Wireless Weather Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Davis Vantage Vue Weather Station is a new model from this U.S. company that builds high-end stations. The Vantage Vue is the low end of their products, but is still far above the competition in quality and features. I bought this one to replace another weather station that, although I've had it for several years, had never been very satisfactory. When the wind gauge worked, the rain gauge wouldn't. The wireless transmitter wouldn't send signals through an exterior wall to the console, so I had to hard-wire them together. The software connection in my computer was a poor database.
When I got a new computer, I no longer had the required serial port for the old station, and since the anemometer, wind-direction and rain gauge had long since quit working, it was time to replace it with a better system.
The vantage Vue checks wind velocity and direction, temperature, rain-fall, humidity and barometric pressure like most weather stations. This one also calculates wind chill, heat index, heating and cooling degree-days, moon phase, 12-hour forecast, and several other functions, and displays them on an easy-to-read display. It works wirelessly so well, that I tested it by carrying the console 100 yards from the house and could still easily get transmissions from the sensor suite. The Station comes with well-written manuals that are easy to understand. Installation was pretty simple and without any complications. I highly recommend this unit for serious weather-watchers.

Vantage Vue includes a sleek but tough outdoor sensor array and distinctive LCD console. Sets up in minutes and starts sending data wirelessly to the indoor console. The console also displays weather forecast icons, moon phase, sunrise/sunset times, graphing of weather trends, alarms and more. The unique Weather Center function provides additional information on each weather variable. In addition, Davis has made Vantage Vue radio-compatible with our flagship Vantage Pro2 stations, so you can mix or match most components.

Bushnell 7-Day Hunt Fxi Internet Weather Forecaster (Green) Review

Bushnell 7-Day Hunt Fxi Internet Weather Forecaster (Green)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This will not hold up to the riggers of hunting, camping, or just plain living room use. Why? It's quite cheaply made, not resistant to anything one might regularly encounter while hunting or camping which is why I also said it won't hold up for plain use. If you have a hunting or camping buddy, they'll torment you so much that you have this junk that you'll knock it off a 2 foot table and it will irreparably break. It's just that cheap.
During setup you're supposed to enter the country and state and then county. You can select from US or Canada. I selected US and then, since I hunt on the Eastern shore of Maryland for waterfowl, I tried to find Maryland under the 'states' menus. Maryland DOES NOT EXIST? No way - I thought, so I downloaded from Bushnell its latest software update - apparently Maryland has succeeded from Bushnell's reference of States of the Union.
This item is useless for me for either camping or hunting, it's sitting upstairs just pulling in the outdoors city weather and casting a glow in the living room so that I don't have to burn out the bulb in my night-light.
Oh, and one more thing, this unit receives its weather updates ONLY from the computer that its USB transmitter is installed on. In other words, if you were thinking of taking just the portable, battery operated (makes you think it can go in the woods, eh?) hunting, the Weather info is as olf as it was when you went 275 feet out of range of the computer's USB transmitter.

Inspeed Vortex Handheld Anemometer (Wind Meter) Review

Inspeed Vortex Handheld Anemometer (Wind Meter)
Average Reviews:

I ordered this handheld anemometer for my bf who teaches college meteorology. He wanted a 3 cup anemometer to demonstrate for his classes. This was exactly what he wanted, he says it works great for his purposes, and he can also check wind speeds at home. The price was good, the workmanship of the product is excellent. Delivery time was also excellent, I was told it could arrive as late as Dec 29, but it actually arrived before Christmas, Dec 22 or 23, so from order to home delivery was a very short turn around.

The rain function on this station would never work. La Crosse did not have any recommendations beyond the brief printed instructions that were included with the station. La Crosse wanted me to return two components for repair. I returned the station to the retailer and purchased a Davis Vantage Vue. It is U.S. made, well designed, easy to install and works great. Do not ever buy a La Crosse product!

I very much like the information displayed and how it is arranged. The transmitter is outside a window on the opposite side of the condo and the unit still easily receives the signal through several walls. The only significant negative is there is extra clear plastic covering the front which is highly reflective, often making the information hard to read from many angles. I'm even debating trying to cut it off and make it like other La Crosse stations where the liquid crystal level is the top surface.

Know when to expect strong winds, freezing cold, rain, snow storms and other inclement weather with this forecast station from La Crosse Technology. The main console installs indoors and receives weather data from the included wireless sensor that installs up to 330 feet away. Frost, fog, snowfall, temperature highs and lows are forecast with time frame. The station also displays outdoor and indoor temperature and humidity. An atomic time sets itself automatically for Daylight Savings Time when needed, and shows date along with either 12- or 24-hour display modes. The weather station also displays 12-hour barometric pressure history for more accurate predictions on weather ahead. A handy forecast icon lets you know if it's going to be cloudy, sunny, rainy or mixed. The unit also features 4 LCD screen languages including English, French, German or Italian. The unit is can receive data from up three outside sensors (others sold separately). The receiver measures 6.89 by 4.72 by 1.22 inches. The sensor measures 6.3 by 1.69 by .91 inches. Oregon Scientific WMR200 Professional Weather Center Review

Oregon Scientific WMR200 Professional Weather Center
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pro's: Nice looking display unit (at first glance, read further).Con's: Outdoor sensor quality chintzy, accuracy, customer service, limited history data without hooking up to a computer, set up time, no energy storage for solar, update frequency.I purchased this weather station to replace 3 separate aging weather units to enable all weather data on a single unit.
Upon unpacking the 200WMRa I noticed all of the outdoor sensor units feel like they could break just handling them. After setting everything up indoors to test connectivity, I could not get a reading from the outside temp/humidity. The first time I called customer service they had me run through a battery of tests and instead of sending me just the one sensor (none available), I had to pack up the entire unit and send it back. Two weeks later, I again have everything set up indoors as a test; again no outdoor temp or humidity. This time I order a second unit online so that I can have it quicker and the third sensor was bad as well. Second call to customer service "please send back the entire unit...". I waited an hour and called again and luckily got someone on the phone who let me know that they did have a problem with the sensor (now discontinued) and that they could send me the redesigned sensor. This replacement sensor worked fine, but didn't have solar hookup which defeats one of the advantages of this system.
A note on the solar power on this system; it doesn't have any means of storage, so any time it's cloudy or at night you are running on batteries.
The main console unit looks nice at first glance, but really gives very little data without hooking to a computer via some VERY outdated and glitchy software. The unit's graph is only usable for pressure, rain and wind history. For instance, you cannot see the temp trend for the last few days, only highs or lows from when you first powered up the unit.
Accuracy: At one point I had purchased two systems and had them both set up indoors at the same time trying to work the bugs out of the sensors. Every bit of data was different from both units and not by just 1 degree or 1 percent, it was off by as much as 5 degrees/percent in each field. Sure enough if you read the published specifications, it states about that much as far as accuracy. To me, if you are going to spend this much money on knowing whats happening outside, you might as well have REAL DATA to go by.
Update frequency: If you hear a really big wind gust outside, you may be standing there a minute or two before seeing how high it actually was.
I didn't initially want to spend another hundred on the Davis unit; after my experience thus far I figured I could sell this on ebay and put the extra toward the Davis.
BY CONTRAST: The biggest differences on the Davis unit is that all the outdoor sensors are mounted in one reasonably sized very sturdy unit; that utilizes true solar with storage that only resorts to batteries if it hasn't seen light in 3-4 days. The main display is built like a tank in comparison; the graph can be used to watch any data you choose over whatever time period you choose, such as: last 24 hours, 24 days, 24 minutes (rain) or even 24 years. Highs and lows can also be seen for ALL DATA for any time you choose: Daily, hourly, monthly or even yearly. Now you can see at a glance "What was the coldest day last year?" or "What was the highest wind gust last year?", etc.
The Davis units update every 2-10 seconds depending on data; basically real time. Published accuracy is 0.6 of a degree!!
I went with the Davis ISS (integrated sensors) with the ProVantage 2 console/display. These together cost $360.
Save the time & frustration and buy any one of the Davis units the first time, it is money well spent.

This sturdy and weighty piece of weather-monitoring equipment looks quite lovely hanging on our living room wall.
I was a bit skeptical at the price, but after reading many helpful reviews on Amazon and other sites, I decided to go ahead and risk getting this barometer, sight-unseen as it were.
I am not disappointed. it appears to be very solid, it came with a simple yet almost ingenious way to hang it on the wall...easy and allowing one to take the barometer down as desired.
Easy to calibrate (if necessary) and very pretty in it's simplicity. I am very pleased with this purchase and would be quite inclined to buy another one as a gift should the appropriate situation arise.

I live in a rural area, so in order to get the forecast I would have to log on to the computer or wait for the nightly news. My weather station solved this issue for me. I am easily able to view the weather for today and the next three days. I have found the forecasts to be pretty accurate. The only aspect I would call into question is the accuracy of the wind speeds, but the wind gusts seem about right. Other issues I noticed is that the unit does not appear cabable of being hung on a wall, you need to push a button to get the current outdoor forecast and the unit you put outdoors is not waterproof. I found a convenient space to put the outdoor unit where it will stay dry, but this may not be an option for everyone. However, I really appreciate the option to have weather alerts sent to the unit (free option for one year). Since we live in a rural area, there is a good chance that we would not receive severe weather warnings from the television or hear sirens from town. Overall, I love my weather station and I am surprised at how often I look at it and have already begun to rely on it.

It consists of nine molded plastic plates and an UV inhibited ABS plastic mounting arm. The wedge-shaped plates provide maximum airflow around the sensor while at the same time minimizing direct exposure to sunlight. The passive shield is shaped to allow natural air convection around the sensor so that the air temperature inside the shield is a good representation of the outside air. The shield also provides protection from rain and snow. The SRS100LX radiation shield fits most temperature and humidity sensors sold by Ambient Weather. Order the SRS100 for smaller sensor installations (reference dimensions below). The SRS100LX is designed with a highly reflective white surface to reflect the sun's direct radiation. The multi-plate design allows for maximum airflow. The UV inhibited ABS plastic mounting arm can be mounted to any vertical surface. U-Bolts are included to mount to any pole.Compatible Sensors*: RTGR328NA, TX50U-IT, TX13U, TX6U, TX7U, TX4U, TX18U, TX8U, TX9U, WS2010-22, WS2010-25, WS2010-28, WS2310-25, TX21U-IT, TX25U-IT, TX27U-IT, TX28U-IT, TX29U-IT, TX37U-IT, TX29UDTH-IT, TX22U-IT, and other sensors from different manufacturers are also compatible with the SRS100 *Some sensors require the removal of mounting bracket or aesthetic covers to fit within the inner cavity of the SRS100 (WxLxH): 2.5" x 4.3" x 7.4".

Northpoint GM8047 Weather Station Review

Northpoint GM8047 Weather Station
Average Reviews:

I bought three of these from woot.com. One as a gift and two to keep. I set up the remote units on different sides of the house and can check their temperature with either base station. The base station itself can receive data from up to three remotes.
I'm giving the station three stars because the instruction sheet notes that the temperature readings from both the base station and the remote units can be off by up to 10%. That error seems too high.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WA-1440U 4-Day Talking Internet-Powered Wireless Forecaster Review

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WA-1440U 4-Day Talking Internet-Powered Wireless Forecaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While Weather Direct offers some interesting technology, it fails flat out when it comes to delivering on that technology.
The WA-1440U fails more than not to connect and update with the Weather Direct servers, and the included TX-50U outdoor temperature sensor has a mind of its own. It works when it feels like working, and the rest of the time, you get nothing except dashes for the outdoor temperature on the display.
I have tried many times to set my preferred audio broadcasts, and performed many manual updates, but so far have failed to receive any of the audio information.
Sure, I paid only about $8.95 for the whole package at Radio Shack (it was clearance), but the system is not worth the cost of the batteries I had to purchase for it.
Unless LaCrosse Technologies gets its act together, I would not recommend anyone to purchase any Weather Direct devices at any price. Perhaps things will be straightened out eventually, but considering the trouble I am having with the basic technology (like the wireless sensor transmitting its data to the gateway and/or the display), I don't think this is going to happen.

With this talking La Crosse Technology internet-powered wireless forecaster, one no longer needs to wait for the TV weather reporter to hear the local weather. The Weather Direct WA-1440U four-day forecaster provides free weather forecasts sent directly from the internet to the unit for viewing and audio broadcast. By pushing the audio forecast key on top of the sleek black display, a male or female voice shares the selected location\'s daily weather, chosen from over 60,000 US and Canadian locations. The A/B/C keys broadcast custom audio feeds of news headlines, sports, and more. To transmit internet forecasts, an AC-powered gateway connects with a secure LAN cable to a network router. Additionally, a TX-50U wireless outdoor sensor measures temperatures right outside the front door.
The display stands upright or wall hangs. Function keys on top of the display enable LCD contrast, scrolling-speed, and volume adjustments, Fahrenheit/Celsius selection, alarm setting, five-minute snooze activation, and viewing micro forecasts for morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Accompanied by mounting hardware, both the gateway and sensor communicate from 330 feet unobstructed. To operate the forecaster, no additional software or Wi-Fi connection is required, nor does the computer need to be on. However, high-speed internet service, a network router, and the separate purchase of three C and two AA batteries are necessary. A limited one-year warranty covers the forecaster.

La Crosse Technology Weather Direct WD-3103U 4 Day Internet Powered Wireless Forecaster Review

As said numerous times...forecasts are not even close; can not monitor outdoor temperature without pressing "snooze" button (which can not be done unless holding the unit with another hand); online monitoring of home temperature is non-existant; will not answer customer service email. An expensive exercise in futility...
