(More customer reviews)I find this rain guage to be not user friendly. I had trouble getting accurate readings from the time I first started using it. Reaching help by telephone is difficult; often there is no one to answer the phone. When I have found someone on the other end of the phone they have been helpful, but the information they give should be in the instruction manual. The instruction manual needs to be more thorough in order to explain all the possibilities of what can go wrong and how to deal with these situations.

Monitor rain conditions with this wireless rain center. From La Crosse Technology\'s The Weather Channel collection, the rain center comprises of a TX24U-IT rain bucket sensor and a white LCD receiver, which stands alone on a tabletop or wall mounts. The sensor measures the total rainfall (with a range of 0 to 787 inches), rainfall for the past 24 hours, and the current rainfall\'s heaviness. To prevent water from overflowing, the rain bucket self-empties with its internal system of tilting cups. From up to 330 feet, the sensor transmits data every six seconds at a 915 MHz frequency. The receiver relays the total rainfall and 24-hour rainfall in inches to a hundredth of an inch, and features graphic indicators for current rain conditions. (More customer reviews)I bought this on clearance from Wally World for $30. It's an attractive device. I like the display layout with the current temp and forecast because it is not cluttered with too much information and easy to read. But the WeatherFX forecaster is far from perfect. The manual says it receives updates every 15 minutes from the network. This may be so, but it seems the network forecast is only updated once every 24 hours. I've never seen the weather forecast for the week change during the daytime. It always happens sometime in the middle of the night. The current temp appears to be a forecast also. I've seen the current temperature off by as much as 10 degrees when compared to my outside thermometer or the local news. On average I would say the current temp is within +/- 5 degrees of the actual temperature. Not horrible, but not up to date either. The weather forecast itself is about as accurate as any other weather forecast. It gives you a general idea of what to expect. One cool feature on this device is that when it downloads your local forecast, it downloads the forecast for all the cities it supports. So you can instantly check the forecast of about 150 US cities by using the "location" button. Another great feature is that it downloads all its data from a pager network and not the Internet or a PC. The backlight is nice and bright, but there isn't a button to turn it on or off. It is always on when the AC plug is connected and always off when running on batteries. For $30, it's a keeper for us. I would be disappointed if I had paid $100 for it.

(More customer reviews)Nice looking units, do not take a lot of space. You can place them in any flat surface (using the stand) or hang them from a wall (using a small screw.) They seem to be quite precise; I set two units up - I placed the sensors at different parts of my condo (on the outside) and then I set them side by side.
The 1st unit registered within 10 minutes (as well as the 2nd unit) - they both downloaded the time from the US atomic clock, but I had to set the time zone manually (no biggie, just follow the instructions!) and both have the exact same values registered after 15-20 minutes of operation - now at least I'll have something to remind to take a jacket during the upcoming Winter days. Weather changes very often here in Denver, Colorado - like the locals say: "if you don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes and it'll change!" Ain't that the truth!

Oregon Scientific RGR126 Cable Free Long Range Rain Gauge Review

(More customer reviews)The setup was easy and the gauge/remote temperature sensors worked well (initially, anyway!). The display unit is attractive and doesn't take up a lot of space. HOWEVER, after just a few months, the LCD display for the rainfall information faded until it was unreadable. Then, the base unit began to fail to communicate with the rain sensor, followed shortly by a failure to communicate with the temperature sensor. All troubleshooting steps were followed and all failed.
Upon calling for warranty service, I was told to send the unit back and that Oregon Scientific would simply mail me a new one - right answer! However, that was in early October. It is now nearly the end of January, and no unit. I called to follow up and was told that they were out of stock and had NO IDEA when they might be shipping the replacement unit, and that there was no other type of unit that could be substituted. I asked that my request be escalated but there has been no response.
This is pitiful customer service. Do not purchase any Oregon Scientific product expecting that they will honor their warranty.
***UPDATE 2/8/2007***
I checked the Oregon Scientific website and discovered that one can buy a new unit for immediate delivery. Called customer service (again) and was told that the sales and warranty divisions have separate inventory and that the inventory for the warranty division is still on backorder. And they have no idea when the units will come in. And NO! we cannot get you a replacement from our sales division, even if you have been waiting for FOUR MONTHS. I asked that the call be escalated and was able only to leave a voice mail with a supervisor.
***UPDATE 2/18/2007***
Still no replacement. The customer service supervisor did not return my call. I have now sent a letter via snail mail to the president of the company asking that they fulfill their warranty commitment.
***UPDATE 3/1/2007***
At long last I have a replacement unit. I received follow-up calls from both the corporate and the customer service offices. I guess the keys to getting action from this company are persistence and taking your complaint to the top. It's too bad to have to go to such lengths for a simple product replacement.
***UPDATE 6/13/2008
The outdoor temperature sensor has failed and no longer transmits to the base station. The rain gauge is still working.

1. The instructions are very poor.
2. The outdoor gauge and the indoor indicator must be fairly close together. In my case I had to put them about 20 feet apart with direct line-of-sight going through a thermo-paned window.
3. In order to get the indoor and outdoor units to communicate, you have to have the two units within about 5 feet of each other while you install the batteries in the indoor unit.
4. The ability to reset readings to zero are "clunky." In order to reset the 24-hour reading, you must remove the batteries for two minutes. Then you have to go through the process of getting the outdoor and indoor units communicating again. (See No. 3, above) Additionally, resetting the 24-hour reading also resets the total accumulated reading to zero.
5. While the description says batteries last 36 months, I have had to replace mine every three months. Replacing the batteries in the outside unit is not easy, and the clips on the battery case broke on the third time I replaced them. It took some drilling and screwing to jury rig a repair. Moreover, replacing the batteries requires going through the process of establishing communication between the two units again (see No. 3 above).
6. The limit for the 24-hour reading is 10 inches. This may not be a problem in most places; however, in Florida it is a problem. When the 24-hour reading goes over 10, the indicator shows "OFL", which apparently means "overflow." In order to get it working again, you must remove the batteries in the indoor unit - which resets everything and requires re-establishing communication again (see No. 3 above).
I'd suggest trying a different brand.

The transmitter is outside a window on the opposite side of the condo and the unit still easily receives the signal through several walls. The only significant negative is there is extra clear plastic covering the front which is highly reflective, often making the information hard to read from many angles. I'm even debating trying to cut it off and make it like other La Crosse stations where the liquid crystal level is the top surface.

(More customer reviews)I am very happy with this weather station. It delivers everything as advertized. However, the following notes would be helpful to consider before purchasing:
1. To get a below freezing operating range on the remote unit (essential if you live where it snows) you'll have to buy lithium AA batteries which are a little more expensive and hard to find than regular alkaline ones.
2. The atomic clock syncronized well but was set up for the wrong time zone. The documentation included with the device didn't include instructions on how to change it. After searching the manufacturer's website, I found a instructions for a similar device that worked.
3. Don't expect to wall mount this device. The table stand is molded into the housing and is not removable.

(More customer reviews)If you don't like using a computer to get fancy up-to-the-minute personalized weather forecasts, then you may prefer this to the TV, newspaper, or radio.
But it is disappointing that the outdoor temperature from the wireless sensor that they give you (the most basic of information, that changes the most quickly) is the least convenient piece of data to get out of the system.
You know the old joke about the weatherman who predicts a warm sunny day and doesn't have the sense to look out the window and see the cold rain falling?
That's what I'm reminded of, after spending an hour trying to discover a convenient way to find out what the temperature is outside with my fancy new wireless, internet-connected "weather direct" device.
I finally read in the manual how to get it to show me the indoor temperature all the time on the display (use the "+" key...). But to see the outdoor temperature, I either have to wait up to 40 seconds for the right text to scroll by on the display, or I have to reach over and press a button on it and look quickly before it goes away. And you need to brace the unit to press the button since it doesn't come with any mounting screws. Sort of a pain if it is in an awkward place. That is still better than when I started on the slow scroll speed - it was 60 seconds then.
Next I thought, hey - they say this thing lets you find out your own outdoor temperature via the internet (e.g. if you're on vacation). So I should be able to write a program to do that and show it to me on a corner of my computer screen.
But sadly, the web site only shows it to you via a proprietary "flash" plugin. That means that you can't see it on even the fanciest of mobile phones like the iPhone, Blackberry or Android, or via a number of other common internet devices either. And you have to share your own temperature with [...] in order to see it yourself. Or so I' told - the Weather Direct tech support person couldn't log in himself and said it looked like the site was "being updated". And he confirmed that there wasn't an easier way to get the outdoor temperature.
I think I'll go get a simple wireless indoor outdoor thermometer, since the current temperature is what I look for dozens of times a day and there are so many ways to get the forecast.

I was looking for a decent priced rain gauge, but didn't want one of those pesky "wireless" kinds that usually either receive severe interference, or doesn't work half the time due to battery damage. This product eliminates the need for wireless. I found it more to my advantage being as it displays itself on a nice size LCD screen. This product only takes one battery, which is like terrific. I recommend using only name brand with this product. It was very easy to install, and even allowed you to mount it to a surface of your choose. I choose my patio siding fence. You just mount the bottom with 2 screws, then you insert your battery in the machine, screw it in, then your ready to go.
This was very easy to setup and install, compared to my previous wireless ones. It evens self empties people! This is a big advantage to us weather fanatics. The LCD displays the time as well as rainfall form today all the way up to a month ago. The unit will not reset its data stored in it, unless you replace the batteries. This needs to be down about once a year. I have found this one to be the most in tuned with my Davis system, but for mere pennies of the cost! Listen people, if you need a reliable rain gauge, at a sharp competitive price, this unit is a MUST!
I am fixing to buy a bunch for gifts to give to my weather friends.

I placed several regular outdoor thermometers that agree with each other near the sending unit and the sending unit reads as much as 5 degrees off either direction. I tried different locations for both the sending unit and display unit. I removed the batteries and did the complete set-up again and still no improvement. Not happy with it.

Oregon Scientific WMR100 Professional Wireless Weather Station Review

(More customer reviews)I have the Oregon Scientific WMR100 which comes with a rain collector, a combined wind/temperature/humidity sensor, a display unit, and various mounting hardware. I tested its accuracy in several ways, including pouring carefully measured amounts of water (from a rain gauge) through the rain collector, comparing the temperature readings with a very accurate thermometer, and holding the wind sensor out the window of a car at 40 mph. The results were impressive. I had previously tried these tests on a LaCrosse weather station as well as one from Radio Shack, neither of which was completely accurate. The Oregon Scientific WMR100 was right on the mark for measuring preciptiation, and also for temperature. The temperature was down to minus 15F one night, and lithium batteries still worked fine. The outdoor temperature sensor is slow to respond to rapidly rising or falling temperature, but this is probably a good design feature to avoid over-reaction to direct sunlight if it's not in the shade. The wind speed readings for 40 mph on the odometer ranged from 40 to 45+ on the display unit, but doing this out the window of a car may not be 100% reliable as a test! The display unit sits firmly on a table (well weighted in the bottom) yet is easy to use as a hand unit. It is a little inconvenient to have to scroll through the settings to see everything -- for example, the readings for rainfall, UV, and barometric pressure do not display simultaneously and it is necessary to use the control buttons to change between these settings in order to see them all. The manual is good in explaining everything. The construction is very sturdy considering that it's made of plastic, and the mounting pole is even metal. All in all I am very satisfied with it and certainly would recommend it over LaCrosse for a number of reasons. From what I would expect for something at this price, I would give it 5 stars.
Update, July 2, 2008: After several months, the temperature and humidity signals were no longer coming through to the display unit without constantly having to reset the sensor (on the roof!), so I returned the whole weather station under warranty, as instructed by Oregon Scientific's Customer Service Department listed in the warranty. After more than 7 months and many inquiries, they had not sent me the new unit yet, saying that it was "back ordered" and would be sent when available.... in a few months! I then contacted the Oregon Scientific retail store where I had purchased the unit, and with no hesitation they told me that they backed the product and would send a replacement. So, if you buy, buy from a retailer who will back the product or directly from the company's retail store. Don't depend on Oregon Scientific's Customer Service Department! The Oregon Scientific retail store in Tigard, Oregon was very helpful in dealing with the problem because I had purchased it there in the first place and they still had a copy of my receipt on file. My only regret is not having called them first when the problem began.
Update July 24, 2009: This weather station is still working wonderfully!

Oregon Scientific RGR682 Wireless Rain Gauge with 10-Day Rainfall Memory and Digital Clock Review

(More customer reviews)It worked for a few weeks. Now, it no longer computes rainfall and I can't get the Total and Current display to stop blinking. I looked all through the booklet but nothing mentions my problem. I've E-Mailed the company and they had me pull the batteries, let it sit for a day and reinsert the batteries. I let it sit for two days, put in new batteries and still can't get it to work. I'm now waiting on a reply (takes about a week to get replies). I figured I'd spend additional money to get a good one - BIG MISTAKE!
UPDATE: They had me "reset" the unit. It worked. Unfortunately, we went through a dry spell. It just rained and guess what? It no longer works. To reset the unit AGAIN means pulling the cover, removing a bunch of screws, battery and hitting the reset button. But why do that - it will just stop working again. I sent a message back to the company. Let's see if they do the right thing. I will keep everyone informed.

(More customer reviews)I've owned the LaCrosse WS-9020U-IT for about 8 months. It was easy to set up and after an initial wait of several hours for the clock to read the atomic clock signal, it has worked fine.
The LaCrosse replaced an Oregon Scientific forecaster which was lost during a move. In my opinion, the Oregon Scientific was more accurate, but it did not have as many forecast possibilities and features. Instead of forecasting only Sun, Cloudy, Partly Cloudy, and Rain, the LaCrosse also includes forecasts for Lowest night time temp., snow, frost, storms, high winds, tempest (that's what it indicated during a recent tornado warning for the area), fog, etc. Unfortunately, anything other than the 4 icons are in the lower section and are somewhat difficult to read as it alternates between those, the lowest and highest temp of the day, and forecast lowest temperature for the night.
Instead of the silly boy or girl icons which are on so many LaCrosse products, the display is more simple and straight forward; good for a weather hobbyist. Indoor and Outdoor Temperature and Humidity are in large numerals. There is a great bar-graph which shows changes for a 12 hour period of time, in additon there is an arrow showing the current tendency, up or down.
The biggest drawback to the WS-9020U-IT is that there is no backlight of any kind. At this price point it should not have been omitted. In addition, the viewing angle isn't great so the forecaster needs to be placed where the light is adequate as well as at the correct angle. That combined with the small lettering for the expanded forecasts which alternate between several things, it is difficult to read at best. Trying to get the information you want with a quick glance is impossible.
I'm really torn between giving it 3 stars or 4. It is feature rich but the lack of backlight and small lettering is a substantial issue. Since I don't belive the remote sensor is 100% accurate (reading a few degrees higher than it should), my final decision is to only give 3 stars. I don't regret the purchase, but if I had it to do over, I'd want a unit with a backlight for easier viewing.

With this La Crosse Technology internet-powered wireless forecaster, one no longer needs to watch the TV weather reporter recite the weather for every corner of the county to hear one\'s local forecast. Not only does the Weather Direct WD-3102U four-day forecaster provide free internet forecasts transmitted directly to its display, but it also relays the outdoor temperature from right outside the front door with the included TX-50U wireless sensor. (More customer reviews)I'm a meteorologist. If I had it in my budget to get a professional weather station (like from Davis) for my home I would but until I do this station will serve nicely.
The display unit is nice and large, very easy to read. The base is narrow enough that I can set it on the kitchen window sill without worrying it will fall into the sink. The remote sensor is about 30-40 feet away, around the corner of the house. Our home has metal siding and the signal from the remote has to travel through two exterior walls and a window; we've had no reception problems.
The sensors are accurate. When I first put in the batteries (follow the instructions as another reviewer said) I let the outdoor sensor sit next to the indoor sensor for quite a while. The readings from the base unit and remote matched within 0.7 of a degree and 2% humidity.
The clock set itself within about an hour of putting in the batteries.
The base unit is easy to read and full of information. The unit records not only high and low temperature and humidity for both the indoor and outdoor sensors but also the date and time the reading was taken. If you were so inclined you could reset the measurements on 1 January, then on 31 December see when you had your highs and lows for the year.
I want to address a couple of comments by other reviewers. First, the specifications of the unit (found on page 23 of the manual downloadable from Amazon) clearly state the unit will only report outside temperatures to about -22F. Expecting La Crosse to do something about this is like buying a Geo Metro and complaining that you can't compete in NASCAR. The unit is not built for those extreme low temperatures. Don't buy it if it doesn't meet your needs.
Second, the Weather Channel reports measurements taken by a weather station (often at an airport or NWS office) that is in your cable viewing area. The Weather Channel is not reporting conditions in your backyard. Official measurments are taken using instruments housed in a shelter built to certain specifications, usually 4-6 feet off the ground. I've got my outdoor sensor stuck to the side of the house about 8-9 feet up. It's good enough for backyard meteorology but it's definitely doesn't meet requirements for official measurements.
Third, the reason the pressure tendency chart blinks (actually it's displayed in a scrolling fashion) is "to avoid burnout of the LCD". Manual, page 18, section I9.
Remember, the pressure displayed is station pressure. The values reported by the Weather Channel are converted to sea level pressure. Station pressure is affected by the height of the weather station; the higher you're located above sea level the lower the pressure displayed, compared to sea level pressure. Fortunately it's not the number that matters. What you're interested in as a weather watcher is the pressure tendency. If the pressure is dropping then look for worsening weather; likewise with increasing pressure you can expect conditions to improve.
All in all this is a nice package with many features found only on more expensive units.

The unit is still going strong after a year, though the outside sensor died. It fell off the side of the house a couple of times - it's possible that had something to do with it. Fortunately the replacement sensor is only $15 here on Amazon, though it doesn't come with a weather shield. I have it under an eave, but I still may seal the new sensor (La Crosse Technology TX6U Wireless Temperature Sensor) with silicon as a precaution.
I didn't realize how much I looked at the thing until the sensor died...I'm going through data withdrawal now.
Interestingly, the unit is now branded as "The Weather Channel" wireless weather station. When I bought this it was just a regular old wireless weather station. Perhaps TWC branding is the reason the price has gone up since last year.

I followed the "Quick Start Guide" and I ran into a couple issues...
First off, I had to get my altitude from my GPS unit, but I am sure there is some info off the internet that should get you close.
Secondly the dang Time Zone issue. I tried and tried and tried, and finally after several attempts I got it. The key to changing your time zone is make sure the Day is displayed next the time SA for example. Then holding the ^ UP button allows you to change your time zone. Intially I had the seconds next to the time and it would not allow me to change the time zone.
Hope this helps someone out there and saves them the 30 minutes of my life I wont get back ;)
