Oregon Scientific BAR332ES Solar Charging Weather Station Review

Oregon Scientific BAR332ES Solar Charging Weather Station

I love this system. Easy to set-up and easy to charge. The first day I had it sitting on the window ledge to catch some fresh sun rays, but after the initial charge it uses ambient light (from even my room lamp) to get its charge. Getting it to synch up with the World Time Clock took it over night to do it. I know plenty of impatent people will complain about it not synching up right away, but a few of my clocks took it over night. There are three distinct time / date / day displays that you can choose to be displayed at the bottom row, but it will not allow you to see both the time and date at the same time. I have it set to display HH:MM Dd. The display is large enough for me to read from about 5 feet away. So when I wake up in the morning, I can read the temp / time. Logically, I would assume that you would want to see the indoor temp first and using the largest font, but this is set up to display the outdoor temp first, indoor temp second.
It has a back light function is set on the top, but on the back half of the clock. Its completely flush, so I have a hard time actually activating the back light to view it in the dark. Normally the back light / snooze is set slightly higher to activate it, but this button sits at an awkward position.
Its pretty accurate as I measured it against a stand along a Honeywell (TM005). It off by about 0.5 degrees from the Honeywell in both indoor / outdoor temp, so its good enough for just a regular Joe to get an understanding of the temp. The weather predictor (image display) is pretty useful and somewhat accurate. I would have rather opted out that display for a humidity indicator instead. What...no HUMIDITY?? From the product description, it says that it provides the following: Weather Forecasting, Indoor/Outdoor temperature and humidity. Well, unfortunately it doesn't provide humidity.
I still kept it...but if you know how to get it to read humidity, please let me know.

Conant Custom Brass Model T-6C Vermont Copper Dial Thermometer Review

Conant Custom Brass Model T-6C Vermont Copper Dial Thermometer

This Thermometer is the first thing I look at in the morning. It was intended to mount just outside my window, the "arm" that came with it was not long enough to extend past the window casing so my very-handy-significant-other fashioned another one out of a metal rod. It is very easy to read and is spot-on. I love knowing what to wear for my daily walks and knowing when to stay in snuggled in my favorite blankie.

Shouldn't a weather instrument be as durable as your house?Shouldn't it enhance your view while it measures the temperature? We think so!That's why we use solid brass and copper housings and real glass. Each Vermont Dial Thermometer has these qualities to ensure our high standards are met. These classic thermometers combine practical simplicity with timeless design.Solid brass and solid copper endure well outdoors because they are naturally resistant to corrosion.Left unattended, they will attain a rich, dark patina like that of a copper roof or outdoor lantern. We do not apply a protective coating to the surfaces of our outdoor products because there is no clear coating that lasts as long as the raw metal itself. This dial thermometer is finished in antiqued copper and uses a 4.25 inch diameter dial face with an outdoor swivel arm bracket for mounting at just the right angle.

Acu-Rite 00831A1 Wireless Thermometer Review

Acu-Rite 00831A1 Wireless Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This indoor outdoor thermometer is very easy to use and set up. I like the wireless technology, although the stated maximum distance for the placing the sensor of up to 100 feet away might be overly optimistic. I originally placed the sensor about 20 feet from the unit and then relocated it closer for better results.
Resetting the minimum/maximum setting is as easy as holding down the celsius/fahrenheit button on the rear of the thermometer for three seconds.
Two minor issues-
The sending unit is not waterproof, and needs to be protected from inclement weather. I eventually placed mine in the tool tray of my garden hose reel. The instructions suggested to placing it under a soffit or overhang, however a decorative little bird house would work well too.
In very cold weather, single digits and below, the manufacturer recommends lithium ion batteries for the sending unit, as alkaline batteries don't perform as well in very cold conditions.

Springfield 91505-1 Digital Rain Gauge with Thermometer Review

Springfield 91505-1 Digital Rain Gauge with Thermometer

Don't waste your money. Not only is it not accurate, but I am typically intersted in the rainfall measurements between zero and one inch. This only records in "tenths" up to 1/2 inch. And then it jumps to one inch. So anything between 1/2 inch and one inch will remain a mystery. How stupid is that?

La Crosse Technology WS-6010U-IT Solar Temperature & Humidity Station Review

La Crosse Technology WS-6010U-IT Solar Temperature and Humidity Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having an excellent experience with another La Crosse Technologies product (bought 6 years ago) I made it a point to seek them out when looking for a new indoor/outdoor thermometer. What a mistake that was! The problem seems to be in the sensor design. It has to be mounted so that it receives enough light to charge the batteries yet sheltered enough so that it isn't exposed to moisture because the plastic sensor case has holes and if water gets in the solar charger is toast. The directions suggest mounting it under an eve or deck rail, which I did, but of course, sometimes rain doesn't fall straight down. Water still managed to enter the sensor through the holes in the case and the outdoor temperature stopped reading inside the house. Since the solar cell was wet and no longer working, I tried to replace the solar batteries in the sensor with standard AAA batteries, only to find out later from their Tech Support that the sensor is not made to be opened and I voided the warranty. They suggested that I go to their "outlet website" and buy a new sensor. Guess what--this type sensor isn't offered on their website. So I sent another email to tech support advising them of this and asking if a different sensor in the same frequency range would work--preferably a closed one that wouldn't allow moisture to enter. They didn't bother to even respond to the second email. So they get one star for selling junk, and the same one star for poor customer service. This was a real disappointment since the one I bought 6 years ago (with a sealed sensor) is still chugging along.

Chaney Instruments Acu-Rite 00611 Thermometer/Hygrometer with Wireless Remote Sensor Review

Chaney Instruments Acu-Rite 00611 Thermometer/Hygrometer with Wireless Remote Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This equipment is frustrating.
It is, as the first reviewer said, very easy to get going. Despite caveats in the instructions about situations where the units may not be able to communicate well enough, we have had the full quantity of signal strength bars showing on the main unit display no matter where we place the units, even when the signal has to go between concrete floors and through external concrete walls. Remarkably good. The bar display feature is notably worthwhile.
We have now had the 00611 for about three months.
Initially, the two units agreed with each other out of the package when placed side by side, which is of course how it should be.

However, we have recently had to do this sort of side-by-side test again as the reading from the outdoor unit started getting 'stuck' at an unlikely 98% when humidity was very high, but wouldn't come down, even when brought indoors for a while. [The spec. says that the units' operating range only extends to 95% - so I think '98%' may be a kind of default or error reading. It was a very high humidity day when the 98% problem occurred].
We assumed that the outdoor sensor had become damp and needed time to dry out in order to register lower humidity levels.
The outdoor unit is normally installed in a totally covered location, high on a wall under a four-foot overhang.
The outdoor humidity reading did indeed abruptly start to come down after the unit had a few hours indoors, but stopped when it got within 10% of the indoor reading. (The two units were placed side by side indoors at this time).
With the two units still side by side, we turned on a dehumidifier on the far side of the big room. The outdoor unit reading seemed to get a jolt and soon showed 10% less, not more, than the indoor reading.
But now, as I write, with the dehumidifier having been off for twelve hours, the outdoor unit, still indoors alongside the main unit, registers 71% whereas the indoor reading is 65%. It's all very confusing.
The batteries are Duracell Alkaline and are testing at 1.57 or 1.58 volts.
This cycle of events has actually been repeated, with small variations, a number of times.
There's clearly something going on that I don't understand. It's not certain that there's anything wrong with the units, but maybe the physics (?) of it all are just too much for a consumer-grade product to encompass without these apparent aberrations popping up.

LCD Display Temperature and Humidity Meter with Alarm Clock Hygrometer Review

I wanted this unit primarily for the humidity reading. The clock works fine. In several weeks, the humidity reading has not moved from 20%. Since I live in an arid climate, it could be that this unit is not capable of providing a reading below 20%
Additionally, there are no instructions provided at all. Good luck on figuring out how to set the clock and alarm.

I bought this thermometer to replace a five year old (same thermometer) I had in my car and the out side temp probe got damaged and needed replacing.
The first one work perfectly over a temperature range from over 100 deg F to below minus 20 deg F and the thermometer always worked. By far the best digital thermometer I've ever owned.

Chaney Instruments Acu-Rite 02001 Wireless Weather Station with Remote Sensor, Clock and Date Review

I bought this as a handy indoor/outdoor temp and humidity device. Both the indoor and outdoor humidity read low when I got it. So I placed them in the bathroom and let the shower run hot for 20 min. and let the devices sit in the steamy bathroom for over an hour. I repeated this process several times. The outdoor sensor responded and recovered a little. The indoor sensor never did. After being outdoors for a while the outdoor sensor is still nearly 10% low. The indoor sensor is at least 10% low. I have had other Acu Rite humidity sensors and had the same problem. I also have several LaCrosse/Weather Channel devices and a Springfield device that all read within 1% of each other and were accurate right out of the box.

I have this clock/weather thing sitting on my desk and it does show the current temperature and humidity - inside the house. Also shows that it is going to be sunny. Right now it is about 25F and overcast. No idea how it is supposed to get it's outside information and wondering if I need to put it outside my office window. The LCD screen would probably freeze then.
